Wolverhampton Wanderers star Jonny Otto could miss a chunk of next season after the Spaniard suffered a significant knee injury.

The 26-year-old started the recent Europa League tie against Olympiacos, but he was forced to leave the field of play after only 17 minutes, as Wolves narrowly progressed through to the quarter-finals with a 1-0 win before being knocked out by Sevilla.

Wolves' medical staff have confirmed that Jonny has suffered damage to his anterior cruciate ligament 'which will require surgical repair', meaning that the wing-back could be set for an extended spell on the sidelines.

“In the first-half of the match with Olympiacos Jonny suffered an injury to his right knee," said club doctor Matt Perry.

“Yesterday a scan confirmed the first clinical impression of an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament which will require surgical repair.

“This has been arranged and the whole team wish Jonny well on his path to recovery.”

Anterior cruciate ligament injuries tend to require six to nine months of rehabilitation following surgery, before a player is able to return to action. This will come as a huge blow to Wolves coach Nuno Espirito Santo, who utilised the Spaniard in all-but three Premier League matches last season.

Jonny initially joined the Midlands club on loan in 2018, before completing a £15m move from Atletico Madrid a year later. He has since become a regular fixture in the team.
