Joan Laporta confirms Ronald Koeman will remain Barcelona manager

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has confirmed Ronald Koeman will not be sacked this summer despite months of speculation suggesting the club were on the hunt for a new boss.

The Dutchman has endured a difficult first season at the helm of the club he represented as a player between 1989 and 1995.

Some poor end-of-season form ended Barça's chances of being crowned La Liga champions for the first time since 2019, while their round of 16 exit from the Champions League at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain saw Koeman's tenure come under increased scrutiny.

A whole host of names have been linked with the top job including Roberto Martinez and club legend Xavi, but Laporta has now confirmed via the club's official Twitter account that Koeman will continue as Barcelona head coach next season.

It remains to be seen how the news will be received by Barcelona fans, though for now Koeman is free to continue his summer transfer business.

The Blaugrana's financial woes have been well documented in recent times, with the club still desperately clinging on to the premise of a Super League in a bid to fund their ludicrous wage bill.

However, that hasn't stopped them from being very active in the transfer market early on this summer, with Manchester City pairing Serio Aguero and Eric Garcia both arriving on free transfers.

The majority of Barcelona's business is expected to be conducted on the free-agent market as they look to tighten the purse strings, and Georginio Wijnaldum and Memphis Depay are both understood to be on their radar.

One of the main pieces of transfer business Koeman will be desperate to rubber stamp this summer will be Lionel Messi's new contract. The Argentinian forward is understood to have agreed terms on a new two-year deal and Koeman will no doubt be keen to keep hold of his talisman as he looks to guide the club to domestic and continental honours next season.
