Jim Curtain hails Andre Blake for stellar performance vs Nashville SC

Philadelphia Union figure Andre Blake furthered his case as Major League Soccer’s best goalkeeper after a brilliant performance against Nashville SC on Sunday. 

Blake played a crucial role in holding off the hosts in the first half, making four shocking clearances. His shining moment came with a point-blank reaction save to Muyl’s strike from just six yards out. 

Despite their best efforts, Nashville simply could not get past the Jamaican national. 

"He’s the best goalkeeper in the league," Philadelphia Union head coach Jim Curtin said after the game. "He showed that today."

"The way the goalkeeper played – you see why Blake is one of the top goalkeepers in the league, if not the best," added Nashville head coach Gary Smith. "He was inspiring.”

Even Nashville defender Alex Muyl agreed. 

“He made an unbelievable save. I just had to make good contact, I did, and I thought it was over. But he made an unbelievable save. There’s not much more I can do but give him credit.”

Blake first joined the Union in 2014 after being selected as first overall in the MLS SuperDraft. He became the first goalkeeper in league history to be taken first overall in a draft. 

He made just one appearance during his rookie season, before going on to become a crucial part of the team. Blake now stands as a two-time MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, earning the titles in 2016 and 2020. 

He’s managed four clean sheets so far this season, and has conceded just six goals. Despite Nashville’s 15 attempts, Blake only conceded the 85th minute penalty. 

But after an MVP performance, Blake credited the team for earning a road draw. 

“That’s what we really do best," Blake said. "We like it when nobody gives us a chance. But we know what we’re capable of doing. We’re a quiet, confident group. We have a group of guys who really thrive in these moments and we did exactly that tonight.”
