Jacob Ramsey: Things to know about the Aston Villa midfielder
By Ross Jackson
As a football fan, there's nothing quite as satisfying as seeing of one of your club's homegrown youngsters flourishing in the first team.
Aston Villa fans know this feeling all too well, having watched Jack Grealish develop into one of the best players in England, and it seems the next top prospect off of the Villans production line is already finding his feet in the Premier League.
19-year-old Jacob Ramsey's presence in the Villa first team is growing by the week, with the teenager featuring in 11 of their previous 15 league outings.
But just who is this new kid on the block? 90min has provided you with a rundown of everything you need to know about the Birmingham born midfielder.
1. Been at Aston Villa since he was six
Ramsey was born in Great Barr and he joined Villa at the age of six.
Talk of the youngster's potential has been rife in the Villa academy for some time and in 2019 he signed his first professional contract with the club.
Ramsey was named the Academy Player of the season for the 2018/19 campaign and earlier this year he signed a new long-term deal which secured his future at Villa Park until summer 2025.
2. Made his professional debut aged 17
Villa were keen to fast-track Ramsey's path to the first team and in February 2019 he was handed his senior debut against local rivals West Brom.
His maiden outing didn't go to plan as goals from Hal Robson-Kanu and Jay Rodriguez securing a 2-0 win for the Baggies at Villa Park.
The youngster struggled to adapt and his only involvements in the matchday squad for the remainder of the season were a couple of appearances as an unused substitute.
3. His little brother could soon be joining him in the first team
It might not be long before there's two Ramseys in the Villa first-team squad, with Jacob's brother Aaron making waves in the academy (not that Aaron Ramsey, obviously).
The younger of the two brothers was named on The Guardian Next Generation list back in 2019 and is renowned for his goalscoring prowess from midfield.
The Guardian described him as "a technically gifted attacking midfielder who has the ability and vision to create chances for others."
Sounds like Villa are in safe hands.
4. He knows where the back of the net is
Ramsey's biggest attributes are arguably his energy and technical ability, though, his eye for goal has long seen him stand out from the crowd.
Following his turbulent introduction to life in the Villa first-team squad, the youngster was shipped out on loan to Doncaster and he thrived during his brief spell with the League One club.
In just seven league appearances he notched three goals for Rovers before their play-off push was curtailed by the league's cancellation.
5. He's no stranger to the odd wonder goal
Not just a good goalscorer, Ramsey is also a regular scorer of good goals.
The midfielder's already notched a number of eye-catching efforts which have gone viral, with wonder goals against Reading and Swansea in the Villa Under-18 squad's run to the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup.
His effort against the Swans saw him start and finish a flowing move, picking out the top corner from the edge of the area with a beautifully controlled effort.
