Chelsea will kick their Carabao Cup journey off with a tough clash with Manchester City on Wednesday.

Unfortunately, they'll have to do so without right-back Reece James, who remains sidelined with a nasty knee injury.

Despite initial confidence over his ability to recovery for the knockout stages of the World Cup, James is understood to have been informed by England manager Gareth Southgate that he will not be in his final squad.

As a result, James is not expected to be seen again until after the World Cup comes to a close, although Chelsea are not concerned about his recovery.

James was jogging out on the Cobham training pitch earlier this week and is believed to be slightly ahead of schedule, but with a lot of work to do in such a short time, his dream of making the World Cup squad is over.
