Neymar failed to complete 90 minutes for Brazil in their World Cup opener as he limped off the field late in the second half of the 2-0 victory over Serbia.

The subject of nine fouls, Neymar was visibly distraught as he left the pitch and was seen speaking with team doctors, who were applying ice to his clearly swollen ankle.

Reports suggest Neymar was in tears on the bench and he did not celebrate his team's victory, instead heading straight down the tunnel with his boot off and his swollen foot still on show.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward has just four days to recover from what the team doctor described as a 'sprain' if he wants to feature in Brazil's next group game against Switzerland, who saw off Cameroon earlier on Thursday.

“Neymar had a sprain in his right ankle, a direct trauma when his opponent’s knee made a movement causing the sprain," said Dr. Rodrigo Lasmar. “He had a little swelling in his ankle, we started the treatment with ice on the bench and he has now followed the physiotherapy treatment.

Manager Tite was adamant that Neymar's time at the tournament is not over.

“You can be sure that Neymar will play again in the World Cup, I am absolutely sure of that. He’s going to play in the World Cup” he said after the game.

Tite also has to address an issue with right-back Danilo, who appeared to pull a muscle but soldiered on until the end of the game as the boss had no substitutions left.
