It's fair to say that some of the best players of all time have played for Inter and AC Milan throughout the years.

Javier Zanetti, Paolo Maldini, Kaka, Ronaldo, Lothar Matthaus, Alessandro Nesta, Ruud Gullit - the list is endless.

So with all these players in mind we decided to build a classic Derby della Madonnina XI, filled with the best players to have played for the club in the last 50 years.

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Walter Zenga (GK) - One of the greatest 'on the line' goalkeepers of all time. Zenga was near unbeatable when stationed directly between the posts, and enjoyed 12 trophy-laden seasons at Inter.

Javier Zanetti (RB) - A true Inter legend, Zanetti played over 800 times of the club and was the best player on the pitch in the majority of those games.

Giuseppe Bergomi (CB) - 'Lo Zio' was the leader of the near-impregnable Inter defence during their Scudetto-winning 1988/89 campaign.

Franco Baresi (CB) - 20 years at AC Milan, the defender stayed with I Rossoneri through thick and thin...mainly thick though as he did win six Scudetti and three UEFA Champions Leagues during that time.

Paolo Maldini (LB) - Of course Maldini is in this team. He's probably the best defender of all time.

2. Midfielders

Lothar Matthaus (CM) - The German midfielder had a long and brilliant career, but his best years were spent at Inter. In his four years at the club Matthaus won the Scudetto and the World Cup - which is very good all things considered.

Ruud Gullit (CM) - A Ballon d'Or winner in Milan, Gullit was outrageously brilliant in Arrigo Sacchi's famous side, winning back-to-back European Cups during that era.

Kaka (AM) - Kaka was undeniably the best footballer in the world pre-Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. During his first spell in Milan the dynamic Brazilian won pretty much everything the game has to offer - Ballon d'Or, Champions League, you name it, he won it.

Sandro Mazzola (AM) - Mazzola was the star of one of the greatest teams in Italian football history: Helenio Herrera's Inter. Under the guidance of Herrera the attacking midfielder was one of the best players in Europe, and is deserving of his spot in this team.

3. Forwards

Marco van Basten (ST) - Pound-for-pound Van Basten is the best attacker to ever play for AC Milan. The forward won three Ballons d'Or at the club. That's good.

Ronaldo (ST) - One of the greatest footballers of all time. Ronaldo was at the peak of his powers in his two seasons at Inter.
