Two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo ensured Juventus overcame Inter in a heated first leg of the Coppa Italia semi final on Tuesday evening.

It was Inter, however, who started off the brighter of the two sides and found an opener within ten minutes through Lautaro Martinez, who neatly slotted home from a Nicolo Barella cross.

The first half action continued as VAR intervened to award the visitors a penalty after Ashley Young visibly had a hold of Juan Cuadrado at the back post. Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up and converted from 12 yards to level the scores on 26 minutes. The Portuguese then capitalised on a calamitous defensive mishap and impressively found the back of the net from a narrow angle just nine minutes later.

Neither team could find another goal after the break but it was Inter who had the better of the chances, most notably Alexis Sanchez having his shot cleared off the line brilliantly by Merih Demiral with half an hour to go.

Now, to some player ratings.

Inter

1. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Samir Handanovic (GK) - 5/10 - Made four saves throughout, but in the end cost his side dearly through a lack of communication with Alessandro Bastoni for Juve's second.

Milan Skriniar (CB) - 5/10 - An average performance from the Slovakian. Didn't do anything drastically wrong, but overall was uncharacteristically sloppy.

Stefan De Vrij (CB) - 6/10 - The Dutchman was strong in the air and was good positionally, while also looking the most assured on the ball out of Inter's back line.

Alessandro Bastoni (CB) - 3/10 - Also at fault for the Old Lady's winner. A woeful touch to take the ball away from Handanovic and was weak against Ronaldo - just so silly.

2. Wing backs & Midfielders

Mateo Darmian (RWB) - 5/10 - Fairy decent outing, but marked down for wasting a glorious chance with 20 to go as Gianluigi Buffon palmed his six-yard effort away.

Nicolo Barella (CM) - 7/10 - Inter's brightest performer on the night. A lovely cross to supply Martinez with the opener, and looked tieless in the middle of the park.

Marcelo Brozovic (CM) - 5/10 - Might as well have been off the field. A couple of good tackles at the base of Inter's midfield, but never looked like impacting much.

Arturo Vidal (CM) - 5/10 - Was one of the nine players to be booked in the match, but might have seen red. How hard is it to not go around kicking everyone?

Ashley Young (LWB) - 5/10 - Didn't do much for his side at all and his main contribution was to sloppily give away the penalty for the equaliser - one to forget for the former Manchester United man.

3. Forwards

Lautaro Martinez (ST) - 6/10 - Looked a threat in the first half after scoring the early goal, but quietly fizzled out after the restart and couldn't provide the final push for his side to bag a second.

Alexis Sanchez (ST) - 6/10 - Did well to hold the ball up and lay it off to Barella in the build up to the Inter goal, but really should have scored their second after the break as his effort was cleared off the line by Demiral.

4. Substitutes

Ivan Perisic (LWB) - 6/10

Christian Eriksen (CM) - 6/10

Stefano Sensi (CM) - N/A

5. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Gianluigi Buffon (GK) - 6/10 - Making his 1100th senior appearance, the 43 year old looked sloppy at times, but made up for it with a great save to deny Darmian an equaliser in the second half.

Juan Cuadrado (RB) - 6/10 - Quiet throughout, but made his impact by winning the penalty with great movement and positioning in Inter's box.

Merih Demiral (CB) - 8/10 - A good defensive showing, and produced a moment of real quality with his goal-line clearance form a Sanchez effort to save his side - a huge moment.

Mathijs De Ligt (CB) - 8/10 - The Dutchman was another player lucky not to see red, but overall marshalled Inter's front line very well making six interceptions and three tackles.

Alex Sandro (LB) - 7/10 - A great performance by the Brazilian. Picked himself up after failing to get back to block Barella's cross for the first and went on to mark to perfection and supply quality into attacking areas.

6. Midfielders

Weston McKennie (RM) - 7/10 - Good defensive impact, showing discipline in tracking back, while also always providing an option in the penalty area when on the attack.

Rodrigo Bentancur (CM) - 5/10 - Taken off in the second half after being wasteful on the ball throughout and failing to put his mark on proceedings - not the best outing.

Adrien Rabiot (CM) - 7/10 - A quietly brilliant showing form the Frenchman. Moved the ball well and kept thing simple, while screening the back four well, achieving four ball recoveries.

Federico Bernadeschi (LM) - 5/10 - Failed to make any impact on the game as he couldn't seem to find his quality from out wide. Taken off during the second half.

7. Forwards

Dejan Kulusevski (ST) - 5/10 - Was largely overshadowed by his strike partner and couldn't get in amongst the action that much, not even registering a single shot.

Cristiano Ronaldo (ST) - 9/10 -
Another talismanic performance from the Portuguese superstar with two crucial goals. Showed composure, will power, tenacity and quality throughout, inspiring his side to the win.

8. Substitutes

Arthur (CM) - 6/10 - Came on for Bentancur in the midfield and instantly provided some calmness in possession.

Danilo (RB) - 6/10

Alvaro Morata (ST) - 5/10

Giorgio Chiellini (CB) - N/A

Federico Chiesa (ST) - N/A
