Indian Super League (ISL) side, ATK Mohun Bagan will reportedly be renamed back to Mohun Bagan FC, according to a report in Bengali tabloid, Dainik Statesman.

The fans of the Indian footballing giants have in the past expressed their displeasure with the management ever since the merger with Amar Tomar Kolkata (ATK ) took place - with many taking to social media to criticise the management, while some held protests outside the club tent and demanded the ‘ATK’ prefix to be removed permanently.

It has been reported that the club will need to play with the ‘Mohun Bagan’ name in order to compete in the Calcutta Football League (CFL) and that they will have to once again register under the Indian Football Association (IFA).

The Mariners have competed twice so far in the ISL under the merger with ATK, finishing runners-up in their inaugural season and reaching the semi-final stage of the competition in the following season. They have also qualified for the inter-zonal semi-finals of the ongoing 2022 AFC Cup after topping their group ahead of Basundhara Kings, Maziya and fellow Indian side, Gokulam Kerala FC.

While the above name change has not been confirmed by the club officially, it will be interesting to see whether they do decide to go back to being called Mohun Bagan FC in the near future.
