How Paris Saint-Germain could line up in the 2021/22 season

So. They've done it. They've actually gone and done it.

Once it was confirmed Lionel Messi would not be continuing as a Barcelona player for the 2021/22 season, Paris Saint-Germain were immediately pegged as a potential destination for the Argentine legend.

That move has now been confirmed, adding Messi to an already illustrious prospective starting XI for the French giants.

He's not the only player they've brought in this summer, either. Gianluigi Donnarumma, Achraf Hakimi, Sergio Ramos and Georginio Wijnaldum have all traveled across Europe to join Mauricio Pochettino's side, who are now one of the big favourites for Champions League glory for the upcoming season.

With all that in mind, let's check out how they could look during the 2021/22 campaign.

GK: Gianluigi Donnarumma

First up on the list of new arrivals in Paris is Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Italy's hero of Euro 2020 would walk into pretty much every team in the world, and while PSG have made a lot of great free signings this summer he's definitely the pick of the bunch. Well, it's between him and Messi anyway.

With Keylor Navas recently signing a new deal it seems unlikely the Costa Rica international will be moving on, and if he does stay in the French capital PSG will have two quality goalkeepers on their books.

Navas started PSG's Ligue 1 opener against Troyes, but it's expected Donnarumma will usurp him once he's fully up to speed.

RB: Achraf Hakimi

We told you they weren't messing about in the market this summer.

One of the reported reasons Antonio Conte left Inter so soon after their Scudetto win was the club's insistence on selling some of their biggest stars to generate cash, and Achraf Hakimi's departure from San Siro suggests said reports were true.

PSG faced stiff competition from Chelsea for the Moroccan's signature, but eventually they were able to thrash out a £60m deal and even for such an eye-watering fee he's a brilliant buy.

CB: Marquinhos

While PSG have been linked with a whole host of defensive reinforcements, their first choice central defensive options are very much settled.

Club captain Marquinhos suffered a number of injury problems last season, but when fit he's an automatic starter and even if they do look to bolster their options he'll remain one of the first names on the team sheet.

CB: Sergio Ramos

Next up on the list of quality free signings is Sergio Ramos.

Admittedly the Spaniard's fitness could be an issue after he spent the majority of his final months at Real watching from the sidelines, but if PSG can keep him fit he's still a top-class defender.

Les Parisiens lost a wealth of experience when Thiago Silva left the club last summer, so what better way to replace him than with a four-time Champions League winner?

LB: Theo Hernandez

One of the problem areas in PSG's squad was at full back and they're well on their way to addressing them.

Theo Hernandez is another big name potentially on his way out of Milan this summer and PSG are in pole position to snap him up.

It remains to be seen whether Pochettino's side will be able to reach an agreement with I Rossoneri. Bids have been rejected and the window is approaching its latter stages, but if they can secure a deal Hernandez would be a hell of an upgrade on current options Juan Bernat, Layvin Kurzawa and Abdou Diallo.

CM: Georginio Wijnaldum

Seriously, are any of the 2020/21 squad getting a look-in?

PSG probably didn't even want to sign Georginio Wijnaldum - they just did it to prove they can.

With the Dutchman not penning a new deal at Liverpool he's now officially been unveiled as a PSG player, and we can probably all agree it's just funny to see Super League stars Barcelona get robbed at the last minute of a player they looked nailed on to sign.

CM: Marco Verratti

We'd like to celebrate the fact we've finally got another member of the 2020/21 squad in the starting XI but even this one isn't nailed on.

Chelsea have been linked with a move for Marco Verratti but in truth it seems highly unlikely Les Parisiens would let a player of his ability leave.

Expect Verratti to remain at the club as they look to win back their French crown.

AM: Angel Di Maria

PSG will always be linked with the most exciting talents in the world, but in Angel Di Maria they already have one of the most underrated attacking players out there.

The 33-year-old is definitely in the twilight of his career, but his stats from last season prove he can still cut it at the top level and having signed a one-year extension at PSG it seems they may be prioritising other positions before looking for his replacement.

RW: Lionel Messi

You might not think it's particularly romantic in the grand scheme of things, but PSG could hardly turn down the chance to sign one of the game's greats, could they?

Messi was visibly upset at the press conference he held while confirming his Barça exit, but football waits for no one and soon he was jetting over to France to get the final details of his move to PSG confirmed.

They've been runners up and reached the semi finals in the Champions League in recent years, but will Messi's addition finally get them over the line? Time will tell.

ST: Kylian Mbappe

Chat continues to persist over Kylian Mbappe's future, but a move this late in the window would be quite a shock and he seems set to stay at PSG this summer.

Whether the wonderkid will be a PSG player this time next year remains to be seen - with reports suggesting he intends to run down his contract before finally moving to Real - but for now he's one of Pochettino's main men.

LW: Neymar

Another man who'll unquestionably be central in their efforts to win back the Lique 1 trophy.

Questions have been raised over Neymar's future in Paris, but having put pen to paper on a new deal said rumours have disappeared.

He'll no doubt be pining for a move back to Barcelona once again in the near future, but for now he's staying at PSG.
