Man Utd appear to have found a long-needed midfield talisman in Casemiro this season, but they will have to get used to being without him for the next few games.

The former Real Madrid man was sent off against Southampton for what the referee deemed a high challenge.

Man Utd may well appeal the decision due to Casemiro’s offending foot appearing to deflect off the top of the ball before making contact with Carlos Alcaraz, but it would still seem unlikely to succeed.

Casemiro was actually a stranger to straight red cards before arriving in England, having previously only been sent off for two yellow card offences. Now he has been given straight reds twice in his last three Premier League appearances.

It all means Man Utd will have to do without the Brazilian for a while, but how many games will he miss and, perhaps more importantly, which games will they be?

How many Man Utd games will Casemiro miss?

Usually in the Premier League, a straight red card for this kind of incident comes with an automatic three-match ban. That, as we know, is a considerable chunk of football in itself.

However, because this is Casemiro’s second straight red card of the season, the Brazilian will be forced to sit out for four matches instead.

With an upcoming international break, that means the next domestic game in which Casemiro can feature for Man Utd will be on April 15  at Nottingham Forest.

Will Casemiro suspension only apply to Premier League games?

This is a bit of a good news/bad news situation for Casemiro and Man Utd.

The good news is that the suspension won’t prevent him from playing in the Europa League. That means the midfielder will be available when Man Utd travel to Spain to face Real Betis this week.

However, he will be forced to sit out the upcoming FA Cup quarter-final game against Fulham next weekend as part of his suspension.

What Man Utd games will Casemiro miss?

That FA Cup game against Fulham will be the first of the four-game suspension. However, should Man Utd get through then he would be available for the semi-final.

The first Premier League game he misses could be a crucial one. It is away at Newcastle United, who have not given up hope of finishing in the top four. The Magpies will also be keen to avenge the Carabao Cup final defeat to Man Utd - a game in which Casemiro scored.

Man Utd then have a revenge game of their own as they welcome Brentford – who thrashed them 4-0 in August – to Old Trafford.

Casemiro will then complete his suspension in the home game against Everton, which is currently scheduled for April 8.
