How Hansi Flick's Winning Start Stacks Up Against Previous Bayern Coaches
As Alphonso Davies bundles in Bayern Munich's fifth goal, seven minutes into the second half, and the Can Can blares out from the PA system, the three points are well and truly secure.
However, seven months ago it was five goals which Bayern conceded to Eintracht Frankfurt that left them fourth in the table, which proved too much for the club hierarchy to stomach. And so, Hansi Flick, the man appointed as Niko Kovač's assistant at the start of the season, replaced the departing Croatian in the dugout.
By drastically improving Bayern's press and, crucially, giving his players digestible, concise instructions to follow, the Bavarian behemoths have swept aside the domestic, and European, competition. With no experience of top flight coaching to speak of, Flick has overseen 22 wins from his first 25 games at the helm of Bayern Munich across all competitions.
Bayern are certainly no strangers to success and while their current incumbent's start looks sensational how does it compare to the past reigns of those to have gone before him?
10. Ottmar Hitzfeld (2007-2008)
Record from first 25 games: 15W 3D 7L
In his second stint as Bayern boss, the legendary figure of Ottmar Hitzfeld was parachuted in to replace Felix Magath midway through the 2006/07 season.
His first game back was a 3-0 humbling away to FC Nuremberg, the first of three defeats in four games. Ultimately they finished fourth but the two-time Champions League winning coach claimed the league title with only two losses the following season.
9. Louis van Gaal (2009-2011)
Record from first 25 games: 14W 7D 4L
Van Gaal's reign in Bavaria included the dropping of star players and his trousers - in fairness, to prove a point about leaving out personnel - but started with three winless games. However, Bayern eventually adapted to his demands and claimed the Bundesliga in his debut campaign.
8. Jürgen Klinsmann (2008-2009)
Record from first 25 games: 16W 7D 2L
Klinsmann's tenure ended before the season had concluded, with Phillip Lahm even claiming the players were forced to meet in the coach's absence to discuss tactics.
The former Germany national team manager didn't start much better, winning only two of his first seven games and was ultimately sacked with his side third.
7. Niko Kovač (2018-2019)
Record from first 25 games: 17W 5D 3L
After ending his Eintracht Frankfurt reign by beating Bayern in the DFB-Pokal final, Kovač had a mixed start at the Allianz Arena. Despite some unexpected losses to begin with - notably, a 3-0 home defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach - Bayern rallied. Although, their title triumph was largely through Borussia Dortmund's lack of composure rather than their brilliance.
6. Felix Magath (2004-2007)
Record from first 25 games: 18W 2D 5L
The former Fulham boss Magath largely has the cup competitions to thank for his decent start at the helm but the infamous disciplinarian was able to steer his side to the summit of the league by November - a position in which they would end the season.
5. Jupp Heynckes (2011-2013)
Record from first 25 games: 18W 2D 5L
Surprisingly, Heynckes' first league game in charge - against Borussia Mönchengladbach, a familiar foe given he became their all-time top scorer as a player - ended in defeat. That campaign concluded with a second-place league finish, a loss in the Pokal final and a Champions League final defeat to Chelsea in Munich.
The pain was soon softened, however, by winning all three competitions the following season.
4. Carlo Ancelotti (2016-2017)
Record from first 25 games: 19W 3D 3L
Much like Ajax in the 1970s after Rinus Michels' departure - which supposedly inspired dancing on tables from the players - Ancelotti reaped the rewards brought by relaxing the strict regime instilled by the previous coach, in this instance Pep Guardiola.
Johan Cruyff's Ajax added another two European Cups under the amiable Stefan Kovács while Ancelotti's side cruised to the title in his debut campaign, occupying top spot for 31 of the 34 weeks.
3. Hansi Flick (2019-)
Record from first 25 games: 22W 1D 2L
Only two of Bayern's coaches this century can boast better records from their first 25 games at the helm than Hansi Flick, a testament to the stunning job he has done so far. And with Bayern still in all three competitions, there may be more history to write this season.
2. Pep Guardiola (2013-2016)
Record from first 25 games: 22W 2D 1L
Guardiola began the near-impossible task of improving upon a treble winning season with a loss to Borussia Dortmund in the season-opening DFL-Supercup. However, a staggering run of results and performances followed as the Catalan evolved his possession-based approach from Barcelona to fit the more physically-dominant Bayern squad.
Incredibly, Bayern didn't actually lose a Bundesliga game under Guardiola until April of his debut season, after the title had been confirmed.
1. Jupp Heynckes (2017-2018)
Record from first 25 games: 23W 1D 1L
In Heynckes' fourth (yes, fourth) stint in the Bayern dugout, he restored some order to a dressing room which the affable Ancelotti had supposedly lost control of as the then 72-year-old guided them, inevitably, to another league title.
