Dreams of competing for the Premier League title this season faded away a long time ago for Manchester United, who have been looking up at the top four for a little too long now.

The signings of Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane haven't transformed United into the all-beating superstars that many predicted. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer paid the price in November and Ralf Rangnick has been trying to salvage something from the season ever since.

The goal had been to reach the top four and qualify for the Champions League again, but United gave themselves too much work to do.

Here's the current lay of the land for United's European prospects.

How Man Utd can qualify for the Champions League

United are officially out of the running for a Champions League place. Defeats to Liverpool and Arsenal severely dented their prospects and the 4-0 humbling at Brighton ensured they cannot finish any higher than sixth this season.

While they can't rise up the table, they can drop down.

The Red Devils have played 37 matches already and, with both West Ham and Wolves holding games in hand, could still technically finish eighth. That would require an extremely unlikely set of results, however.

For Manchester United to secure sixth and Europa League football, they need to beat Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in their final game of the season. However, if West Ham win their matches against Manchester City and Brighton, they would finish higher than United on goal difference.

Should the Hammers overhaul the current three-point gap between the two teams, United would finish seventh, which would see them enter the Europa Conference League at the play-off round stage.
