How Bayern Munich made Champions League history in win over Lazio
By Harry Symeou
Holders Bayern Munich booked their place in the last eight of the Champions League after cruising past Lazio 6-2 on aggregate. Hansi Flick's side won 4-1 in Rome before completing the task with a 2-1 win in Bavaria.
Flick is yet to lose or draw a game in Europe's premier club competition since taking charge of the Bundesliga giants. Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring on Wednesday from the penalty spot and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting doubled their lead in the second half.
Lazio pulled a goal back through Marco Parolo but at no point was the reigning European champions' place in the next round in doubt.
In despatching of the Serie A side, the German's made history in the competition, and here is how...
1. Most quarter-final appearances
Die Roten have now qualified for the Champions League quarter-finals 19 times - more than any other side in the competition's history. Bayern have won Europe's top prize on six occasions previously and stand a great chance of going all the way again this season.
2. First manager to win his first 7 knockout games
There have been many rumours in recent months regarding Flick's future as the Bayern boss, but currently his side sit top of the German top flight and are one of the favourites to win the Champions League - not bad eh?
On Wednesday night the 56-year-old became the first manager to win his first seven knockout stage games. Those victories coming against Chelsea (twice), Barcelona, Lyon, Paris Saint-Germain and Lazio (twice).
3. Equalled their best unbeaten run in the Champions League
In avoiding defeat against Lazio, Hansi Flick's men equalled the club's best ever unbeaten run in the competition of 19 games, which includes group matches.
If they were to avoid defeat in the first leg of their quarter-final they would set a new record. This proves that although they hadn't won the competition since the 2012/13 campaign before last season, their strength in Europe has been growing for a while.
