The Houston Dynamo have made an offer to sign Atletico Madrid and Mexico international midfielder Hector Herrera.

No final decision has been made, but Herrara would join as a Designated Player should he arrive, according to Tom Bogert from

The Texan MLS side currently have one DP spot open on their roster, with Sebastian Ferreira and Teenage Hadebe occupying the other two slots.

Herrera would join with extensive European experience after stints with Atletico Madrid and Porto.

He first joined the Portuguese club from Liga MX side Pachuca in 2013 for an estimated €8m. He recorded 42 goals and 43 assists in 286 appearances.

Following the expiration of his contract with Porto in 2019, he joined Atletico Madrid. He’s made 69 appearances under current manager Diego Simeone, and helped his side to the 2020/21 La Liga title.

Internationally, Hector Herrera has scored 10 goals in 93 matches with the Mexican national team since his debut in 2012. He’s participated in every major tournament since joining the senior team, most notably the 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cup.

He would become the latest El Tri player to join Major League Soccer, alongside Julian Araujo, Chicharito, Carlos Vela, Carlos Salcedo and Alan Pulido.

The Houston Dynamo are undergoing a new era after managing owner Ted Segal took over last summer. Pat Onstad was appointed general manager ahead of the offseason and Paulo Nagamura was named head coach as part of the team’s changes.

The team returns to the pitch for the 2022 MLS season on February 27 when hosting Real Salt Lake.
