Hector Herrera is nearing his Major League Soccer debut.

The Houston Dynamo announced the Mexican national team figure will be eligible for selection on July 9, for the match against FC Dallas at PNC Stadium.

After months of anticipation, the incoming Designated Player is expected to arrive in Houston in late June. He originally signed a pre-contract with the Dynamo in March, amid his final season with Atletico Madrid. Once the La Liga 2021/2022 campaign concluded, Herrera reported to Mexico’s training camp for the June International window.

Herrera comes as a blockbuster signing for the Major League Soccer team.

The player kicked off his career in 2010 with Liga MX’s Pachuca, where he spent three years before making his move abroad to Porto. HH worked himself up from an unused substitute to a staple at the Portuguese club, racking up 35 goals and 35 assists in 245 appearances over six campaigns. In 2019, the midfielder made his way to Atletico Madrid following the expiration of his contract at Porto.

HH also boasts an impressive record with the Mexican national team. After debuting in 2012, the midfielder has managed 10 goals in 100 appearances. He’s represented El Tri in every major Concacaf tournament and two World Cups

Herrera’s experience in the midfield and his ability to manipulate space to direct the attack could become the outstanding factor the Dynamo needs to break into the top five in the Western Conference. The team currently sits in seventh on the table with 18 points from 14 matches under first-year head coach Paulo Nagamura.
