Harry Maguire has called on Manchester United's win over Brentford to be a "turning point" for the club this season.

The Red Devils have endured a horrid start to the 2023/24 campaign, losing six games already - four of which have come in the Premier League at the hands of Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace and Brighton & Hove Albion.

Man Utd looked like they were heading to their seventh defeat of the season on Saturday when, after some sloppy defensive play, Mathias Jensen fired Brentford into the lead at Old Trafford. However, the introduction of Scott McTominay in the 87th minute proved to be the catalyst for a remarkable comeback.

The Scotland international scored a 93rd-minute equaliser before popping up to head home a 97th-minute winner to earn the Red Devils a much-needed three points.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the stunning victory, ex-Man Utd captain Maguire was keen to highlight the importance of such a turnaround.

"That was a really important win. Obviously it has been a difficult time for us at the start of this season. We've not had the results that we, as a club, demand. Like I said, I think the season must start now," he said.

"This must be a turning point for us all, as individuals and as a club. We must kick on from this."

The win was Maguire's first Premier League start of the season - having fallen out of favour under Erik ten Hag over the last 12 months - and the towering centre-back performed admirably for his side by winning three duels, making two interceptions and even bagging an assist for the second of McTominay's two goals.

Maguire got the nod due to Man Utd's current defensive injury woes with starting centre-backs Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez were both unavailable for the game. Speaking about returning to the starting lineup Maguire insisted that he is always ready to contribute for Man Utd.

"I'm always ready when I'm playing. I work hard in training and keep fit every day, and I'm happy that I contributed to a win," he added.
