Gregg Berhalter 'interested' in evaluating MLS-heavy USMNT group vs Bosnia and Herzegovina

United States Men's National Team manager Gregg Berhalter is looking forward to evaluating some new faces in an MLS-heavy camp later this month.

The USMNT have a friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina slated for December 18 at the LA Galaxy's Dignity Health Sports Park.

For that match, Berhalter has named a roster comprised almost entirely of MLS talent of various ages, while the likes of Johnny Cardoso of Internacional in Brazil, Roma's Bryan Reynolds, and Taylor Booth of Bayern Munich II have also been named. The squad even features prospects from USL in Louisville City's Jonathan Gomez and Orange County SC's Kobi Henry.

Young Chicago Fire goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina is another interesting inclusion given he's eligible for Poland and not yet fully decided on his international future.

“Right now, I'm pretty 50-50," he responded when asked by 90min about his international preference in November.

"I want to make sure that I make the right decision and where I'm most comfortable at. So a lot of factors are going to determine what decision I make, but I think that's a long way from here. I'm just going to continue to see how things go and make sure that I make the right decision in the end.”

The United States have further training camps in January to keep MLS players sharp in the offseason before World Cup qualifying resumes. But for now, Berhalter is relishing the chance to take a look at some new faces.

“We get to evaluate some new faces, guys we haven't seen before that we're really interested in working with and keep the guys, the core players of this domestic group, moving,” said Berhalter (via MLSsoccer.com). "We play again January 27, and it's essential that when we hit the field on January 27, we have guys that are ready to compete at a World Cup qualifying level.

“So this [December] camp is essential to have, and we understand that guys have been playing all year and they're fatigued, and that's why the program will be slightly different. But we got to keep them moving and looking forward to competing against Bosnia on December 18.”

Following this friendly, the USMNT face home games against El Salvador and Honduras, either side of an away trip to Canada in World Cup qualifying in the new year.
