Gregg Berhalter announces USMNT Gold Cup roster
United States men’s national team head coach Gregg Berhalter has released the final 23-player roster for the 2021 Gold Cup.
The USMNT will compete in Group B, along with Canada, Martinique and another national team that will be determined by qualifiers from July 2 to July 6. The United States will play all group stage games at Children’s Mercy Park - home to MLS side Sporting Kansas City. Players are expected to arrive in Kansas City on July 5th, following Major League Soccer action over the weekend.
Berhalter stated that every decision made leading up to the final roster was done so with the trophy in mind.
“Our priority is to win the Gold Cup. Anytime we're competing for a trophy, we want to win it,” Berhalter said. “It's going to take a good effort by the group, but it's certainly a focus of ours. We know the games are going to be difficult, and as we looked at the roster for this tournament, we focused on guys who are in form and can help the team win.”
Per Gold Cup regulations, the final roster must be submitted prior to midnight tonight. Should Berhalter want to replace a player due to an injury, he must do so up to 24 hours prior to the team’s first group stage match and select from the previously submitted 60-man preliminary roster.
The USMNT has won the Concacaf Gold Cup on six occasions, most recently in 2017. Before that, the United States triumphed in 1991, 2002, 2005, 2007 and 2013.
