Chelsea manager Graham Potter has admitted he will speak to the English FA about their decision to call midfielder Mason Mount up for this month's international break.

Mount has missed Chelsea's last three games in all competitions because of injury but was still called up for England duty, unlike fellow Blues winger Raheem Sterling, who is also carrying an issue.

Potter has already stressed that Mount will not be part of the England camp because of his injury and has now admitted his call-up came as a surprise.

“Probably, as a club, we will [seek clarification]," Potter said.

“As far as I was aware, he wasn’t going to be available for us at the weekend. He needed a bit of time for his injury to settle down, which pretty much ruled him out of England.

“Whether that means they needed a bit of time to double-check that, I don’t know. I don’t think there’s anything untoward at all, it’s more sometimes these things can be named but there are still a couple of days where things can be changed. But from my selection perspective, he was unavailable for the weekend.”

Pressed for further details on Mount's injury, Potter explained: “It is just a bit of a niggly one with Mason. He will have days when he feels good and then days when he has had setbacks, so hopefully if we can manage him through this period he will be OK.”

One boost for Chelsea is the imminent return of midfielder N'Golo Kante, who has not played since the second game of the campaign because of a hamstring injury which ultimately required surgery.

“Managers before me have spoken very highly about N’Golo because he is a top, top player,” Potter said. “He has been a huge miss to us.

“It’s great for us that he’s back, [but] we need to be mindful of the fact that he’s had a long injury, we need to make the next steps to get him up to speed, which is what we will do.”
