Gianluigi Donnarumma has heaped praise on Thibaut Courtois after his stunning display in the Champions League final, hailing the Real Madrid stopper as the best in Europe.

Courtois set a new record with no fewer than nine saves in Saturday's final, looking impenetrable as he rebuffed Liverpool's advances time and time again - a performance which he insisted proved he deserves more credit.

He's not had to wait long for some high praise, with Donnarumma admitting he believes the Belgian is at the top of the mountain right now.

"He is the best goalkeeper in Europe, without a doubt," Donnarumma told a press conference.

"I saw the game, he played an incredible game, he made great saves and he kept Real Madrid on its feet until the end."

Donnarumma joked that he watched Courtois' performance through gritted teeth, frustrated that it wasn't him who was shining on the biggest stage.

"It could have been us who was there, but unfortunately, that's football," said Donnarumma, whose PSG side fell to Real earlier in the competition.

Real boss Carlo Ancelotti confessed after the game that he challenged Courtois to go out and win the match for Los Blancos - a task the goalkeeper clearly took personally.

"I told [Courtois] that I'll take him to the final and he can go and win it, and that's exactly how it happened," Ancelotti said.
