An early strike from Enes Unal was enough to hand Real Madrid a 1-0 defeat away to Getafe on Sunday.

Getafe unsettled Los Blancos early on with a series of scrappy fouls, and it was the hosts who were celebrating the first goal inside nine minutes. Eder Militao was caught in possession by Unal, who fired home past Thibaut Courtois to get things going.

Real struggled to cope with Getafe's energy and high press, and the hosts could have easily had a second soon after had Nemanja Maksimovic put more on his shot following a shaky Courtois clearance.

Luka Modric had Real's best chances early on. His strike from range was agonisingly close, before the veteran midfielder smashed against the crossbar, and that saw Real take control of the game as Getafe sat back to protect their lead.

Clear-cut chances were at a premium, however, with Real's impressive build-up play usually resulting in nothing in the first half.

The second period was a little more end-to-end early on as Getafe, who easily had the game's best chances in the first hour, made a point of reminding Real that they still posed a threat on the counter.

Real's best opportunity of the game came with 15 minutes to go as Casemiro's glorious volley was excellently repelled by David Soria in the Getafe goal - the first real save he had to make all game.

Carlo Ancelotti's men continued to knock on the door without really testing Soria. Isco's late header was routinely saved by the Getafe goalkeeper, who was celebrating a hard-fought victory when all was said and done.

Real Madrid player ratings

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Thibaut Courtois (GK) - 6/10 - Couldn't do a lot about the opening goal but was fortunate not to concede a second after a sloppy clearance. Quick off his line in the second half to help his defence out.

Lucas Vazquez (RB) - 5/10 - Some nice movement in the final third but his crossing and passing were nowhere near good enough.

Eder Militao (CB) - 4/10 - Looked half asleep. Caught in possession for Unal's opener and was guilty of a few more mistakes.

David Alaba (CB) - 6/10 - Easily the better centre-back but made a poor pass in the first half that almost resulted in a goal.

Ferland Mendy (LB) - 3/10 - Shaky at the back up against Unal and Sandro's energy, but was particularly poor going forwards. Given so many chances and did absolutely nothing before being hooked at half time.

2. Midfielders

Luka Modric

Casemiro (DM) - 7/10 - Some really excellent defending but didn't always cope well with Getafe's energy going forwards.

Toni Kroos (CM) - 7/10 - Twitter focused on one sloppy pass but seemed to ignore all the great ones. As per.

Luka Modric (CM) - 8/10 - Targeted by a lot of scrappy fouls but didn't let that stop him. Unlucky not to bag a worldie early on.

3. Forwards

Karim Benzema

Rodrygo (RW) - 3/10 - Only just back from illness and looked off his game. Really struggled up against Getafe's deep defence.

Karim Benzema (ST) - 5/10 - Some nice off-the-ball movements and combined well with Hazard after the break, but was really underwhelming in the first half.

Marco Asensio (LW) - 3/10 - Hooked at half time after a disappointing 45 minutes.

4. Substitutes

Marcelo (LB) - 6/10 - Involved more in attack but couldn't find the way through.

Eden Hazard (LW) - 6/10 - Flashed some glorious link-up play with Benzema but Getafe's deep block made it tough. Real's most dangerous forward.

Mariano Diaz (ST) - 5/10 - Jumped pretty high.

Isco (CM) - N/A

Peter Gonzalez (RW) - N/A
