A somewhat second-string Real Madrid side could only play out a 0-0 draw in the derby with Getafe on Sunday night, as Zinedine's Zidane men failed to move to within one point of La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid.

The first half proved to be fairly end to end and although neither side found a goal, it wasn't for the want of trying. Among various other chances, Jaime Mata headed onto the post for the hosts and Mariano had an early goal chalked off as a VAR check found the striker to have taken up an offside position in the build-up.

Real struggled to create any clear-cut chances after the interval and it was Getafe who came closest to breaking the deadlock. Thibaut Courtois was forced into superb stops by Enes Unal, whose top corner-bound strike was tipped round the post, and Nemanja Maksimovic, whose deflected effort was just about palmed over the bar by the off balance, backtracking Belgian goalkeeper.

Los Blancos held on for the goalless draw, keeping them second in La Liga - three points behind Atletico and just two above third-placed Barcelona, who have a game in hand. Now, let's see how the Real players rated.

REAL MADRID PLAYER RATINGS

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Thibaut Courtois (GK) - 9/10 - Very commanding whenever the ball came anywhere near him and made several big (and a few spectacular) saves.

Alvaro Odriozola (RB) - 6/10 - Struggled when attempting to contain Marc Cucurella but looked good venturing forward. Put in several good crosses and should have an assist to his name.

Eder Militao (CB) - 8/10 - Was very quick and strong to scurry around at the back to cover for his defensive teammates, making four ball recoveries and an impressive ten clearances.

Victor Chust (CB) - 6/10 - The 'new Sergio Ramos' had a promising outing. Very composed and efficient in possession, while also making seven interventions.

Marcelo (LB) - 6/10 - Didn't have much of an impact going forward but coped well from crosses, making several good interventions at the back post.

2. Midfielders

Luka Modric (CM) - 6/10 - Sat deep throughout and almost played as a third centre-back to oversee his side's activity and plug any possible gaps, making a couple of key interventions.

Isco (CM) - 7/10 - Had a free role in the centre of the park but sometimes left his colleagues vulnerable as he failed to track back. Did play some lovely balls forward to release others, though, maintaining a pass accuracy of 89%.

Rodrygo (AM) - 5/10 - Looked threatening and creative sporadically, but most of his side's attacking play came down the flanks so the game somewhat passed him by.

3. Forwards

Marco Asensio (RW) - 6/10 - Drifted infield a lot and was able to influence play when surging forward, registering two key passes and sometimes creating panic among opposition defenders.

Mariano (ST) - 6/10 - Showed some good movement as he aimed to run in behind. Unlucky as he was about an inch offside for his disallowed strike and had a header cleared off the line, but once again failed to put his mark on proceedings.

Vinicius Junior (LW) - 6/10 - Was marshalled pretty well and got outnumbered on the ball for the most part, but managed to pick up some good spaces in and around the box without really threatening too much.

4. Substitutes

Karim Benzema (ST) - 6/10 - Provided more composure and a better outlet up top, but a scoring spree has to come to an end at some point, I suppose.

Antonio Blanco (CM) - 6/10

Sergio Arribas (RW) - 6/10
