Going into Euro 2020, Germany were tipped by many to struggle and although they came up against the tournament favourites in their Group F opener, there was very little to suggest their critics have been wrong in their assessment of Joachim Low's side.

France took all three points without ever really getting out of second gear and that's a testament to how toothless the 2014 World Cup winners were in attack. Portugal are their next opponents and Fernando Santos' side holds a three-point lead over Germany, but will their situation prompt Low to make changes at the weekend?

Here's the lineup Germany should select to face the holders of the competition.

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Manuel Neuer (GK) - Had no chance of stopping Mats Hummels' own goal versus France and is by far and away Germany's best goalkeeper. One of the first names on the teamsheet and has been for years.

Matthias Ginter (CB) - Was probably the best of Joachim Low's defenders on Tuesday night. The Borussia Monchengladbach star's passing range is useful when looking to progress the ball quickly.

Mats Hummels (CB) - Can't possibly play any worse than he did in the opener. At least he won't be facing Kylian Mbappe this time - just Cristiano Ronaldo.

Antonio Rudiger (CB) - Enjoyed a really good end to the club season and while he wasn't perfect versus France, he showed plenty of bite.

2. Midfielders

Joshua Kimmich (RWB) - Ideally you'd want the Bayern Munich star pulling strings in the midfield, but he's been asked to do a job at right wing back which feels like a bit of a waste. His quality, however, is undeniable and he has to be in the side one way or another.

Toni Kroos (CM) - The heartbeat of the team, if Kroos can find his passing rhythm, Germany could still have a good tournament. Showed he won't shy away from the physical battle either against the French.

Ilkay Gundogan (CM) - Always up for a battle and capable of doing damage in the attacking third, Gundogan is the best partner for Kroos with Kimmich covering on the flank.

Robin Gosens (LWB) - One of Germany's better players in the opener and he'll be looking to pin back Nelson Semedo while causing him problems of his own.

3. Forwards

Kai Havertz (RW) - Largely ineffective during the opener but was prepared to get his head down and work hard off the ball.

Thomas Muller (ST) - Has scored 39 goals for his country, works extremely hard, boasts plenty of experience, and is always capable of being the difference maker.

Timo Werner (LW) - Was left out of the starting XI against France and while he's not always been clinical in front of goal in recent times, his pace and ability to stretch defences makes him a good option.
