Joachim Low will remain in charge of Germany for the delayed European Championship in 2021 after what were billed as ‘crunch’ talks with DFB officials on Monday finished with a show of confidence in the under-fire 2014 World Cup winning coach.

Germany were thrashed 6-0 by a rampant Spain in their last game of the November international break, having previously endured a disastrous 2018 World Cup and fallen from number one in the FIFA rankings to a low of 15th in the two years since.

But Low, who has been in charge since 2006 when he stepped up from assistant coach to Jurgen Klinsmann, has satisfied the DFB that he remains the right man for the job.

The DFB concluded that a single game should not serve as means to judge the performances of the national team and the coach, focusing instead on high quality coaching, the relationship between the team and coach and a clear strategy for upcoming cycles.

Indeed, with Euro 2020 on the immediate horizon next summer, the DFB believe there to have been a number of important sporting achievements. That includes qualification for the tournament, remaining a UEFA Nations League A country and securing a place in pot one among the seeded teams for the European section of the 2022 World Cup qualifying draw in December.

The DFB have expressed confidence in Low and his coaching staff to deliver a successful Euro 2020.

Low remains under contract until 2022 and the DFB have noted that his position will continue to be assessed after each tournament. Both the World Cup in Qatar in 2022 and the European Championship in 2024, which Germany will host, will serve important purposes in assessing the ongoing progress of Die Mannschaft and shaping future plans.
