Germany 3-3 Switzerland: Player Ratings as Spoils Shared in Six-Goal Thriller

Germany and Switzerland played out a thrilling 3-3 draw in their Nations League clash on Tuesday night.

The Swiss got off to a flying start as Mario Gavranovic looped his header over a helpless Manuel Neuer after Xherdan Shaqiri had squandered a glorious early opportunity.

The hosts' woes were then doubled after Atalanta's Remo Freuler rounded off a swift Swiss transition with a delicate dink over an uncharacteristically conservative Manuel Neuer.

Timo Werner, however, quickly halved Germany's deficit with a tidy left-footed finish which left the visitors with a 2-1 lead at the break following an entertaining opening period.

The madness ensued after the break with Kai Havertz equalising before Gavranovic handed the visitors the advantage once more. A bit of magic from Serge Gnabry, however, levelled things up again at 3-3 and that's how it would end amid a relatively quiet end to proceedings.

GERMANY

1. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Manuel Neuer (GK) - 6/10 - Could do little about the opener but certainly should've swallowed up Freuler before the midfielder could chip the Bayern great and double Switzerland's lead. Swept up well.

Lukas Klostermann (RB) - 5/10 - Offered some thrust going forward but not enough considering his tendency to advance. The visitors got in behind him on the break for Freuler's finish.

Matthias Ginter (CB) - 6/10 - Not much to say, to be honest. Typically neat in possession and pretty inactive defensively.

Antonio Rudiger (CB) - 4/10 - Would've had to sacrifice his life to prevent Freuler's effort from hitting the back of the net. Woeful for Switzerland's third, however. Didn't look entirely comfortable overall despite seeing plenty of the ball.

Robin Gosens (LB) - 6/10 - Almost equalised in the first half with a wonderful trivela but denied by Yann Sommer. Forced to maraud into the Swiss third which left him vulnerable in transition and thus, was booked trying to shun a break. Forced off after the restart.

2. Midfielders

Joshua Kimmich (CM) - 5/10 - Wasn't the finest outing on his 50th cap for Die Mannschaft. Failed to provide sufficient cover in transition and endured a poor sequence for Switzerland's third.

Toni Kroos (CM) - 6/10 - Atypically poor decision-making in possession on his 100th cap. Pass was picked off by Granit Xhaka which led to the visitors second. Some good moments in all phases and certainly improved as the contest wore on.

Leon Goretzka (AM) - 5/10 - The Bayern powerhouse was often the most advanced of Die Mannschaft's midfield three, especially out of possession. Perhaps hung the pivot behind him out to dry on occasions, though.

3. Forwards

Kai Havertz (RW) - 7/10 - Typically functioned in favoured right half-space, looking to contribute to Germany's build-up. Quiet opening period before equalising with an impressive sequence which showed off his capabilities in all three phases.

Timo Werner (ST) - 7/10 - Made up for squandered chance at 0-1 with a delightful individual effort after the visitors doubled their lead. Crossed for Gnabry's smart finish as well. Struggled to assert himself when isolated against a Swiss defender, though.

Serge Gnabry (LW) - 7/10 - Interchanged frequently with Werner which often saw him occupy the central space. Was direct and aggressive but to little avail before his ingenious flick to level things at 3-3.
