Gareth Southgate & England honoured at 2021 BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards

Gareth Southgate has been named Coach of the Year at the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year awards for 2021, with England winning Team of the Year.

The 51-year-old guided the Three Lions to the final of the delayed European Championships, before they lost out to Italy in a dramatic penalty shootout at Wembley.

Southgate previously picked up the 2018 Coach of the Year award, and has again been honoured for helping England reach their first major final since winning the 1966 World Cup - coincidentally the last time they were named Team of the Year.

Recently, Southgate penned a new contract to extend his spell as England manager through until December 2024, having taken charge of the national team in 2016.

Stepping up from his role as Under-21 manager to succeed Sam Allardyce, he immediately had a positive effect on England both on and off the field. Southgate has been credited with bringing a unity and togetherness among the players and staff that has never been seen before.

He's also showed great transparency and a willingness to stand shoulder to shoulder with his players to support important causes, and has used his platform to promote equality and inclusivity in all areas of society.

The night's main award saw Raheem Sterling nominated for his performances at Euro 2020, but the Manchester City winger was unable to garner enough of the public vote to earn a place in the top three.

Sterling enjoyed his Sunday nonetheless, scoring City's fourth goal in their convincing 4-0 win over Newcastle in the Premier League - a victory that earned Pep Guardiola's side a record-breaking 34th win this calendar year.
