Gareth Bale’s agent has confirmed that no decision has been made about the player’s future when he leaves Real Madrid as a free agent in summer, but insists he deserves a ‘grand farewell’.

Bale was recently dubbed a ‘parasite’ in a piece published by Spanish sports daily Marca, prompting the player himself to hit back and label it ‘disgusting’. He also later described it as ‘slanderous’ in a separate statement published on social media.

Bale is out of contract at Real in the summer, nine years after joining the club from Tottenham in what was then a world-record transfer fee.

He went on to win four Champions League titles in his first five seasons, including big performances in the 2014, 2016 and 2018 finals, and has also claimed two La Liga titles and the Copa del Rey during his time in Spain.

But Bale’s relationship with Real fans and the Spanish media has been strained for several years. Injuries have often hampered his availability, particularly since 2019, and he has played only five times in all competition so far in 2021/22 since returning from a loan back at Tottenham.

The Wales icon will still only be 33 by the start of next season and AC Milan have been recently linked with a potential approach. But nothing has been decided as of yet.

“Bale deserves a grand farewell from the club. And no, we have not yet decided on the future,” agent Jonathan Barnett told Deportes Cuatro in Spain.

“He speaks Spanish. What happens is that people who do not know him say that he does not. Stupid and ignorant people who have not spoken to him. It's a shame.

“He has always been very happy in Madrid, he arrived as a young man, his children were born in the city, he has donated a lot of money to Spanish hospitals for Covid and he loves the city and the club, and I think the parasites are the ones who speak ill of him.”
