Gabriel Paulista has apologised for his aggressive foul on Vinicius Junior which saw him sent off during Valencia's 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid on Thursday.

Goals from Marco Asensio and Vinicius Junior set Real on their way to victory at the Bernabeu but with just under 20 minutes remaining in the game Gabriel lashed out at Vinicius, kicking the Brazilian's legs with the ball well gone.

The defender will be out for two matches after the Spanish football federation's disciplinary committee added another game to his suspension on Friday. Former Arsenal centre back Gabriel has now responded to the dismissal, admitting he "lost control" and wants forgiveness.

"I accept the criticism and the red card," Gabriel wrote in an Instagram post. "I am a physical player, but also a noble one. I respect Vinicius and it was never my intention to harm him. We are struggling a lot in this great club, going through a difficult period and emotions are running high.

"Sometimes it is impossible to control one's emotions. I lost control and I sincerely ask for forgiveness."

Valencia haven't had a good season since 2018/19 when they came fourth under Marcelino and currently sit 14th, having lost four of their last five La Liga games. Manager Gennaro Gattuso paid with his job in late January, leaving by mutual consent.

Vinicius didn't suffer any long-term damage and is ready to play in Real's trip to Mallorca on Sunday. They can cut the gap on current league leaders Barcelona with a win before the Catalans face Sevilla that evening.
