Gabby George has been called up to the England squad for Friday night's World Cup qualifier against North Macedonia, after defenders Alex Greenwood, Lotte Wubben-Moy and Leah Williamson were ruled out through injury.

Beth England and Niamh Charles have already withdrawn from the squad for Friday evening's clash after testing positive for Covid-19.

Greenwood and Wubben-Moy did not travel to Skopje with the rest of the squad on Wednesday, and have both returned to their respective clubs to manage their injuries.

Greenwood is suffering from an ongoing knee injury, while Wubben-Moy has a thigh problem.

Williamson has travelled with the squad but will not be available against North Macedonia because she is following concussion protocols.

The Arsenal defender - who was confirmed as England captain for Euro 2022 on Tuesday - missed training this week as a precaution after being assessed following Arsenal's victory over Leicester on Sunday.

It means a first call up since World Cup qualifying in 2019 for George and marks a remarkable fight back from the Everton defender, who missed 12 months of action after rupturing her ACL in February 2020.

The 25-year-old has been capped twice at international level.

England face North Macedonia on Friday evening, before travelling to Belfast to take on Northern Ireland on Tuesday.

The Lionesses currently top their World Cup qualifying group with six wins from six, with these their final competitive fixtures before Euro 2022 kicks off at Old Trafford in July.
