Frenkie de Jong has refused to be drawn on his Barcelona future as he edges closer to a move to Manchester United.

90min understands talks have progressed well in recent days and United are increasingly confident of putting a deal in place for the midfielder.

A broad agreement has been reached over personal terms too, after the player signalled his willingness to leave Camp Nou for Old Trafford, although contract negotiations may still be drawn out as De Jong will likely command a wage that will make him one of the best-paid players in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old was inevitably asked about his future following the Netherlands' 2-2 Nations League draw with Poland in Rotterdam on Saturday night. Having previously insisted he wanted to stay at Barcelona, this time De Jong refused to comment on where his future lay.

A reporter from ESPN asked: "Are you leaving the beaches of Catalonia for the cold of Manchester?"

Laughing, De Jong responded: "No, I can't, I can't say anything."

Sources have told 90min that De Jong has been personally convinced to make the switch by his former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag, who has of course been installed at the helm at Man Utd. Ten Hag's intervention is believed to have played a significant role in the transfer progressing.

Listen now to 90min's brand new podcast, Talking Transfers, with Scott SaundersGraeme Bailey & Toby Cudworth. This week Harry Symeou steps in for Scott and the trio discuss the futures of Bukayo Saka, Rafael Leao, Romelu Lukaku, Kalvin Phillips, Youri Tielemans, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Raphinha, Gabriel Jesus and more.

Talks are ongoing with Barcelona, who are open to the Dutchman leaving should their valuation be met as a result of their unstable financial situation.

The Blaugrana are demanding €75m plus extras worth around €10m, although United's most recent offer was worth €70m including add-ons.

90min understands both clubs believe a deal will be in place ready for De Jong to have his medical at the end of the June international window.
