Freiburg 2-2 Bayern Munich: Player ratings as Robert Lewandowski equals Gerd Muller record

Robert Lewandowski scored a first half penalty to equal Gerd Muller's record of 40 Bundesliga goals in a single season, as Bayern Munich were held to a 2-2 draw by Freiburg on Saturday afternoon.

Bayern, as expected, saw the better of the goal-scoring opportunities and found the breakthrough in the 26th minute. A VAR check found that Thomas Muller had been brought down by Lukas Kubler in the box, allowing Lewandowski to step up and calmly convert the subsequent penalty to finally equal the record.

But Die Roten were caught napping juts three minutes later and conceded an equaliser to Manuel Gulde, who headed brilliantly from a corner.

Hansi Flick's men thought they'd retaken the lead after 51 minutes, but VAR adjudged Serge Gnabry to have been offside before tapping in at the far post. Bayern only had to wait two minutes later to find themselves ahead again though, when Thomas Muller's exceptional volleyed pass across the box was poked into an empty net by Leroy Sane. Lewandowski might have broken the record in the second period, but somehow shockingly missed the target when the ball came to him on the goal line - as rare a collector's item as you'll ever see.

Instead, it was Freiburg who got the next goal, equalising in the 81st minute. Christian Gunter's lung-busting surge into the box resulted in a thumping finish into Alexander Nubel's bottom corner. Both sides pressed for a winning goal but had to settle for a point apiece, and leaving Lewandowski with just one more game to claim the record for himself outright. BAYERN MUNICH PLAYER RATINGS

1. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Alexander Nubel (GK) - 7/10 - Actually made a few fantastic saves, showing bravery and agility to deny Freiburg after the break. Couldn't really do anything about either goal, however.

Niklas Sule (RB) - 6/10 - Looked very leggy on his return from injury but had a solid game without doing anything particularly special. Managed to stifle Freiburg's play down the left but couldn't get forward to threaten their back line.

Jerome Boateng (CB) - 7/10 - Very composed performance, standing strong when confronted with runners. Also played some excellent balls out from the back to set moves in motion.

Lucas Hernandez (CB) - 7/10 - Positioned himself excellently throughout and was key in dealing with dangerous balls from wide areas, making five clearances and winning three aerial duals.

Alphonso Davies (LB) - 7/10 - Always a threat with his pace and dribbling ability and was rapid in tracking back and containing his winger, making three tackles.

2. Midfielders

Joshua Kimmich (CM) - 6/10 - Was left a little isolated in dealing with the counter at times, but did well to keep things nice and tidy and spread the ball wonderfully, threading the ball cleverly through the lines and making two key passes.

David Alaba (CM) - 7/10 - Covered a lot of ground, surging forward throughout and distributing play to good effect. Often looked to get wide to add an extra body and deliver into the area - notably lofting the ball to Muller in the build up to the second goal.

Thomas Muller (AM) - 8/10 - Constantly found himself in pockets of space and was able to link up brilliantly with those around him, making five key passes. Provided a fantastic assist to lay the ball on a plate for Sane.

3. Forwards

Leroy Sane (RW) - 7/10 - Looked bright from the outset, running at his opposite number with the ball and finding pockets of space without it. Managed to find an end product eventually, tapping in for his side's second.

Robert Lewandowski (ST) - 10/10 - Somehow didn't break the record but equalled it with a penalty to hit the magical 40 league goal mark - obscene numbers. His performance doesn't deserve anywhere near a ten, but he did just score his 40th goal of the league season so we'll give him it anyways.

Serge Gnabry (LW) - 5/10 - Drifted infield to find space for most of the match but really couldn't do any damage. Was unlucky not to score, though, as his big toe strayed just offside.
