Frank Lampard has explained why he was so determined to bring Kai Havertz to Stamford Bridge, detailing the specific qualities his new signing will bring to this Chelsea side.

The 21-year-old, who had a hand in 18 goals for Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga last season, became Chelsea's second most expensive signing of all time this summer.

Speaking to Chelsea's website, Lampard explained why he was so excited to have Havertz join his project.

"He is a player I have been aware of for a long time and as a fellow attacking midfield player, I have paid particular attention to those type of players for some time," Lampard said.

"I was aware of his talent and in conjunction with the club, we know how we want to go forward and look to improve in the right areas, and for players who are going to be here hopefully to improve and mature, but are already at a very high level, he absolutely fitted the bill for us, so I am delighted to have him."

Lampard also told the Evening Standard: "His style is very unique, he’s six-foot-two plus which is a great help in the modern day to have tall players in forward areas like that, but the most important thing about him is his natural quality of receiving the ball and talent on the ball and calmness and quality and he arrives to score goals.

"Havertz brings a great versatility for us, he started as a No.8 arriving in the box, sometimes plays on the wing, can play as a false No.9 and he’s very comfortable and happy to play in all those positions."

Chelsea are set to further strengthen their squad by signing Stade Rennais goalkeeper Édouard Mendy, a transfer that will make it their most expensive window ever.
