Fernando Ortiz laments Club America's 2-0 loss vs Club Tijuana
Club America head coach Fernando Ortiz lamented the team’s 2-0 loss against Club Tijuana on Saturday, blaming himself for the defeat while reiterating his support for the players.
After playing two international friendlies in the United States against Chelsea and Manchester City, Club America flew to Tijuana to face their opponent at Estadio Caliente. Despite retaining 63 percent of possession throughout the game, goals from Lisandro Lopez and Joaquín Montecinos propelled the home team to three points over the Mexico City side.
“The cold, quick analysis is that they played badly, when one interprets that the result is played badly, it sometimes indicates a defeat. I think that today Tijuana took more than what they presented on the field, but we must admit that we did not have a good night,” said Ortiz.
“It's soccer, all those victories in a row always insisted on the same thing, I believe a lot in this squad and we have the possibility of thinking about León, we will work for that. When things don't work out, you have to show your face. I'm responsible, we didn't play well, we have to keep working.”
The team has seen a difficult start to the season, winning just one out of the last four games to land in 15th on the table with an overall record of 1W-2L-1D. But the results can be attributed to their lack of focus on Liga MX, turning their attention to club friendlies instead.
Club America participated in the international preseason tournament Soccer Championship tour, bringing together teams from the Premier League, La Liga and Liga MX to compete for a trophy. The Mexico City team faced Chelsea and Manchester City earlier this month, and are set to take on Real Madrid for the last match.
Additionally, Club America is participating in a Leagues Cup showcase against LAFC on August 4, to tease the upcoming competition between Liga MX and Major League Soccer.
The team returns to Liga MX action on July 31, wedging in a game against Leon between the Real Madrid match up and the LAFC showdown to saturate the schedule.
