FC Dallas 2-1 Houston Dynamo: Player ratings as Quignon completes dramatic Texas derby comeback
By Chris Smith
FC Dallas left it late to pull off a dramatic 2-1 comeback win over the Houston Dynamo in the first Texas derby of the 2022 MLS season.
The hosts fell behind to a 33rd-minute Sebastian Ferreira strike, compounding what was a terribly flat first-half performance. Dallas allowed their rivals too much time and space and barely got going in the final third.
There wasn't much change in the second half until very late on, when substitutes Tsiki Ntsabeleng and Facundo Quignon - both introduced in the 84th minute - came up with the goods to complete an incredible turnaround.
Dallas now have 15 points after losing just one of their opening eight games of the season, while Houston remain above the Playoff line after a positive start of their own, despite this result.
Here is how every player rated in the Texas derby:
FC Dallas vs Houston Dynamo player ratings
1. FC Dallas (4-3-3)
GK: Maarten Paes - 6/10 - Could do little about Ferreira's goal or the Memo Rodriguez free-kick that almost made it 2-0. Denied the latter toward the end to keep his team in the game.
RB: Ema Twumasi - 6/10 - Had a tough battle against Picault but gave as good as he got. Grew into the game offensively in the second half.
CB: Matt Hedges - 5/10 - Allowed Ferreira the space to take a touch and score the opening goal. Defended well otherwise but that one moment was costly.
CB: Jose Martinez - 6/10 - Missed an early half-chance to put Dallas ahead, was solid defensively.
LB: Marco Farfan - 7/10 - Did okay defensively but was far too wasteful on the ball at times. Made up for it with the cross that forced the late equalizing goal and a huge tackle in his own box right at the end.
CM: Brandon Servania - 4/10 - Tried to be too safe on the ball but was often sloppy and wasteful.
CM: Edwin Cerrillo - 5/10 - Neat and tidy but a bit reckless with his challenges.
CM: Paxton Pomykal - 5/10 - Failed to progress the ball into dangerous areas enough and was often far too slow with his play. A few flashes of his true quality but a disappointing performance.
RW: Paul Arriola - 3/10 - Ran down a lot of dead ends and failed to create enough serious openings for Dallas. A very frustrating first Texas derby.
ST: Jesus Ferreira - 4/10 - Barely touched the ball in either half. You'd be forgiven for forgetting that Ferreira was even on the pitch at times.
LW: Alan Velasco - 7/10 - The most threatening of the Dallas front three, grew into the game well in the second half and started working the Houston defense.
SUB: Franco Jara (67' for Pomykal) - 6/10 - Injected life into the Dallas attack and came so close to netting a late equalizer, hitting the post with a header.
SUB: Tsiki Ntasbeleng (84' for Servania) 8/10 - Made his limited minutes count by reacting first to Clark's spill and scoring the equalizer.
SUB: Joshue Quinonez (84' for Twumasi) - 5/10 - Didn't change the game.
SUB: Facundo Quignon (84' for Cerrillo) - 8/10 - Didn't have much time to get into the game but did just that with the dramatic winner.
2. Houston Dynamo (4-3-3)
GK: Steve Clark - 5/10 - Commanded his box well and stayed alert to make a couple of important saves, but ruined all his good work by spilling the ball right to Ntsabeleng for the equalizer.
RB: Griffin Dorsey - 6/10 - The odd driving run aside, Dorsey's afternoon was all about defending, which he did well. Picked up a yellow card for wiping out Ferreira.
CB: Tim Parker - 4/10 - Wasn't tested enough defensively until late and didn't react to the challenge.
CB: Ethan Bartlow - 5/10 - Like Parker, wasn't overworked until late but couldn't stop the collapse.
LB: Adam Lundqvist - 8/10 - Pushed forward well and created the opening goal with a brilliant cross. Kept Paul Arriola under lock and key.
CM: Matias Vera - 7/10 - Clean on the ball and combative when he needed to be, but forced out in the second half after picking up a knock.
CM: Adalberto Carrasquilla - 4/10 - Battled hard in midfield but switched off at the back post for Dallas' late winner.
CAM: Darwin Quintero - 5/10 - Had a couple of bright moments but was too quiet overall. Subbed out at half-time.
RW: Tyler Pasher - 5/10 - Was the quietest of Houston's frontline but made up for it with a good work rate.
ST: Sebastian Ferreira - 8/10 - Didn't see a great deal of the ball but made his touches count, firing home the opening goal in the first half.
LW: Fafa Picault - 4/10 - Had a great battle with Twumasi and got into a few dangerous areas. Picault's awful defensive header allowed Dallas to steal a late winner.
SUB: Memo Rodriguez (45' for Quintero) - 5/10 - Came oh so close to doubling Houston's lead with a brilliant free-kick, but wasted a one-on-one chance to end the game toward the end. Proved costly.
SUB: Darwin Ceren (69' for Vera) - 5/10 - Unable to match Vera in the midfield.
SUB: Corey Baird (77' for Pasher) - 5/10 - Didn't get into the game.
SUB: Thorleifur Úlfarsson (77' for Ferreira) - 5/10 - As above.
