FC Cincinnati have had an offer accepted by Atlas for Luciano Acosta, with the Argentinian midfielder to join the side ahead of the 2021 MLS season.

The 26-year-old has experience with domestic football in the States having spent four seasons in the MLS with DC United, before joining Mexican outfit Atlas in 2020.

Atlas confirmed on the club's official website that they have accepted an offer from Cincinnati for Acosta, while the Athletic's Pablo Iglesias Maurer reported that the deal is already done, and he is to arrive in Cincinnati on Thursday afternoon.

"Atlas FC has received a formal offer from FC Cincinnati for Luciano Acosta," an Atlas statement read. "The offer was accepted by the player and we can confirm his transfer to the Major League Soccer club. We thank Luciano for his efforts and wish him success in the next stage of his career."

The MLS season kicks off on Friday 16 April, and Cincinnati get their campaign underway the following day with a clash against Nashville.

With both Cincinnati and DC United plying their trade in the Easter Conference, Acosta could be in line to face his former side at some point during the 2021 campaign.

The move requires Cincinnati to acquire Acosta's MLS rights from DC United prior to the signing being completed. Washington Post journalist Steven Goff reported in February that terms had already been agreed between the two sides for the player's rights to be traded.

According to both the Athletic and the Washington post, United will receive a fee in the region of $500,000-550,000 in allocation money.

Acosta spent the first two years of his senior career playing in his native Argentina, progressing through the esteemed youth system at Boca Juniors and making his senior debut in 2014, before moving on loan to fellow Argentinian side Estudiantes the following year.

Another loan move, this time to DC United, came in 2016, and he made this switch permanent in 2017.
