FC Cincinnati goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer out for 2022 after surgery

FC Cincinnati goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer will miss the remainder of the 2022 MLS season after undergoing surgery on a torn pectoral muscle, the club announced Wednesday.
The 36-year-old suffered the injury in a training session last week, subsequently missing the matchday roster for FC Cincinnati's 1-1 draw with Nashville SC on Saturday.
In a short statement, the FC Cincinnati announced that the club's chief medical officer, Dr. Matthew Busam, performed successful surgery to repair the torn muscle at Mercy Health West hospital on Monday.
Vermeer is an immensely experienced goalkeeper, with five caps for the Netherlands under his belt and over 270 appearances in Dutch soccer for Ajax and Feyenoord combined, winning four Eredivisie titles with the former and one with the latter.
But since moving to MLS with LAFC in 2020, Vermeer has struggled for consistent playing time, making just 15 appearances across all competitions for the Black and Gold before joining Cincinnati in May 2021.
Vermeer played 19 MLS games for the Orange and Blue last season, keeping four clean sheets, but his only appearance in this campaign was in the 5-1 defeat to the New England Revolution in the fifth round of the US Open Cup.
Former Atlanta United stopper Alec Kann and No.2 overall SuperDraft pick Roman Celentano have shared FC Cincinnati's MLS minutes between the posts in 2022.
