FA 'Write to' WSL & Championship Clubs to End Season With Immediate Effect
The FA have written to all the clubs in the Women's Super League and Championship to apparently inform them that the 2019/20 seasons will be finished early, with no further fixtures played.
If true, women's top two tiers in England will become the latest to curtail their campaigns, following the examples set by the men's championships in France and the Netherlands, among others.
With regards to the men's Premier League, work is still underway to complete the season behind closed doors, but it appears such lengths will not be taken to conclude to WSL and Championship divisions.
Exactly how the final table will be decided is not yet known, but regardless of the outcome, Sky Sports have claimed that the 2019/20 seasons will be ended with immediate effect.
The news comes off the back of previous developments revealing that talks were underway to find a solution to the previously suspended leagues. Discussions were being held in order to determine whether it would be feasible to complete the campaigns, although the option of terminating the leagues entirely was also mentioned.
“Our primary concern has always been for the welfare of the clubs and players; and working collaboratively to identify the most suitable and appropriate way to return to football,” read the previous FA statement on the coronavirus impact on the women’s game.
At the point of suspension, Manchester City sat atop of the WSL table by a solitary point over nearest challengers Chelsea, however, the Blues had played one less fixture than the Citizens. Arsenal follow closely behind in third.
Down at the foot of the league, Liverpool were rock bottom with just six points from their 14 matches, although Birmingham and Bristol City were just one and three points above them respectively.
