While Chelsea and Liverpool were away squabbling for the Carabao Cup, 16 top flight sides resumed Premier League action this weekend.

Manchester City just about snuck away with the points after their trip to Everton, Tottenham's thrashing of Leeds saw the Whites part ways with Marcelo Bielsa, and Christian Eriksen made his sensational return to football with Brentford.

Let's have a look at each side's best performing player from the weekend...

Aston Villa - Philippe Coutinho (8/10) vs Brighton

What we said: "For all the silky wriggles in the attacking third, it was an unexpectedly disciplined defensive display that defined a fine outing."

Brentford - Christian Eriksen (7/10) vs Newcastle

What we said: "His arrival finally kicked Brentford into gear. A level above technically and Newcastle were clearly wary of the threat he posed."

Brighton - Robert Sanchez (7/10) vs Aston Villa

What we said: "Unable to do much about Matty Cash's pinpoint strike but impressive in denying Villa from range and inside his own box thereafter."

Burnley - Aaron Lennon (7/10) vs Crystal Palace

What we said: "Looked a spark when he was given the opportunity to directly impact proceedings and, although that wasn't often, he made Palace pay immediately after the break."

Crystal Palace - Michael Olise (8/10) vs Burnley

What we said: "Wow - he's the real deal. A dazzling first half saw him absolutely dominate the match with his attractive creativity and clinical attacking output. Not as influential after the interval."

Everton - Jordan Pickford (8/10) vs Manchester City

What we said: "Made a number of impressive saves to keep City out. Helpless for the goal."

Leeds - Illan Meslier (5/10) vs Tottenham

What we said: "Powerless to stop any of Tottenham's goals, truth be told. Perhaps could have used his 6'4 frame to better effect when attempting to smother Doherty but that's being super picky."

Manchester City - Phil Foden (7/10) vs Everton

What we said: "City's danger man throughout. Always looked like being the man to get the goal. One of the worst he'll ever score but he won't care at all."

Manchester United - Anthony Elanga (8/10) vs Watford

What we said: "Clearly brimming with confidence after his midweek goal. Created numerous chances with direct running and clever passes. Unfortunately missed a great chance of his own."

Newcastle - Joelinton (9/10) vs Brentford

What we said: "He's Brazilian. He only cost forty-million. The Toon think he's brilliant - it's Joelinton."

Norwich - Angus Gunn (7/10) vs Southampton

What we said: "Wrong-footed for the first goal. Stood firm while his goal was under siege by his former employers in the second half."

Southampton - Kyle Walker-Peters (8/10) vs Norwich

What we said: "His feet are so quick, dispossessing him in close quarters is extremely tough. Defended well too. A constant menace."

Tottenham - Harry Kane (9/10) vs Leeds

What we said: "Subtle movement into the hole opened up so much space for Spurs. Timed the run for his goal to absolute perfection and executed the finish with his usual ruthlessness, before turning provider in the second half time and time again. Great assist for Son Heung-min."

Watford - Moussa Sissoko (8/10) vs Manchester United

What we said: "Most of his work needed to be defensive but it was a really disciplined performance."

West Ham - Tomas Soucek (8/10) vs Wolves

What we said: "Picked up some promising, advanced positions in the first half. Got his birthday goal after the break. Many happy returns, mate."

Wolves - Jose Sa (7/10) vs West Ham

What we said: "Great distribution and shot-stopping in the first half. Kept the score down after the break."
