Every Hat-Trick Scored at the FIFA World Cup
Playing at the FIFA World Cup is every young footballer's dream. Scoring on the global stage is even better, but scoring a hat-trick? It doesn't get much better.
Fast approaching nearly 100 years of World Cup history, here's a look back at every hat-trick that has ever been scored in the men's competition...
1. Bert Patenaude (USA)
World Cup: 1930
Round: Group Stage
Game: USA 3-0 Paraguay
American forward Bert Patenaude lived and died in the small Massachusetts city of Fall River, but he will forever hold the honour of scoring the first ever World Cup hat-trick.
He had already scored in the United States’ opening win over Belgium and scored all three in a 3-0 victory against Paraguay that secured progress to the semi-finals.
2. Guillermo Stabile (Argentina)
World Cup: 1930
Round: Group Stage
Game: Argentina 6-3 Mexico
Guillermo Stabile netted a treble in Argentina’s second game at the 1930 World Cup, scoring his country’s first, third and sixth goals in a 6-3 thrashing of Mexico.
He went on to score five more in the tournament as a whole, including one in the final, which Argentina lost to neighbours Uruguay.
3. Pedro Cea (Uruguay)
World Cup: 1930
Round: Semi-Final
Game: Uruguay 6-1 Yugoslavia
Already a two-time Olympic champion with Uruguay before the World Cup era began, Pedro Cea's goals helped the 1930 hosts into the final.
After his semi-final hat-trick, Cea went on to get a crucial equaliser in the final as Uruguay secured a 4-2 comeback win over Argentina.
4. Angelo Schiavio (Italy)
World Cup: 1934
Round: Last 16
Game: Italy 7-1 USA
Angelo Schiavio scored the first hat-trick of the 1934 World Cup as hosts Italy battered the United States 7-1 in the opening round.
The Bologna legend later managed the Azzurri in the 1950s and was the last surviving member of the 1934 squad before he died in 1990.
5. Edmund Conen (Germany)
World Cup: 1934
Round: Last 16
Game: Germany 5-2 Belgium
Germany's first ever World Cup hat-trick was scored in the first round of the 1934 tournament by Edmund Conen, who was still only 19 at the time.
The young forward, who scored four goals at the World Cup in total, was one of nine teenage players in that year's competition.
6. Oldrich Nejedly (Czechoslovakia)
World Cup: 1934
Round: Semi-Finals
Game: Czechoslovakia 3-1 Germany
Sparta Prague star Oldrich Nejedly scored in every game except the final for Czechoslovakia in 1934, with his country finishing as runners-up overall.
Nejedly scored all three Czech goals in their semi-final over Germany and was the first European top scorer at a World Cup tournament.
7. Ernst Wilimowski (Poland)
World Cup: 1938
Round: Last 16
Game: Brazil 6-5 Poland (aet)
Polish forward Ernst Wilimowski was the first player to score four goals in a single World Cup game in 1938 when his side faced Brazil in the first round.
But despite that historic feat, Poland were still edged out by the Brazilians in an 11-goal thriller that was decided in extra-time.
8. Leonidas (Brazil)
World Cup: 1938
Round: Last 16
Game: Brazil 6-5 Poland (aet)
20 years before Pele burst onto the scene, Leonidas was Brazil's first World Cup superstar, netting seven times at the 1938 tournament as top scorer.
He was the first Brazilian to score a hat-trick in a World Cup game and his goals were decisive in this contest as two were scored in extra-time.
9. Gustav Wetterstrom (Sweden)
World Cup: 1938
Round: Quarter-Finals
Game: Sweden 8-0 Cuba
Cuba's only appearance at a World Cup to date ended when they were pummelled 8-0 by Sweden at the quarter-final stage in 1938.
Swedish forward Gustav Wetterstrom completed a hat-trick in the first half that day in the French coastal city of Antibes.
10. Harry Andersson (Sweden)
World Cup: 1938
Round: Quarter-Finals
Game: Sweden 8-0 Cuba
Harry Andersson was the second Swede to score a treble against Cuba in 1938, opening the scoring but not completing his hat-trick until late on.
They were the only goals that Andersson, or indeed Wetterstrom, ever scored in any World Cup tournament.
11. Oscar Miguez (Uruguay)
World Cup: 1950
Round: First Group Stage
Game: Uruguay 8-0 Bolivia
Juan Alberto Schiaffino and Alcides Ghiggia were the lasting heroes of Uruguay's 1950 World Cup triumph, but Oscar Miguez scored more.
Miguez grabbed a hat-trick in the 8-0 group stage thrashing of Bolivia and later got a brace in a crucial comeback win over Sweden.
12. Ademir (Brazil)
World Cup: 1950
Round: Final Group Stage
Game: Brazil 7-1 Sweden
Ademir went one better than Leonidas 12 years earlier and scored four times in Brazil's win over Sweden on home soil at the 1950 World Cup.
The home favourite was on fire at the tournament and scored eight goals in total across the six games he played, equalling the record at the time.
13. Sandor Kocsis (Hungary)
World Cup: 1954
Round: Group Stage
Game: Hungary 9-0 South Korea
There were a record eight hat-tricks scored at the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland and the first went to prolific Hungary star Sandor Kocsis.
The Magical Magyars beat first-time qualifiers South Korea 9-0 in their opening game and Kocsis had his treble inside 50 minutes.
14. Erich Probst (Austria)
World Cup: 1954
Round: Group Stage
Game: Austria 5-0 Czechoslovakia
Erich Probst scored a hat-trick in the final group game to help Austria into the knockout stages in 1954.
That Austria side went on to finish third overall, bettering the fourth place finish of the country’s famed ‘Wunderteam’ in 1934.
15. Carlos Borges (Uruguay)
World Cup: 1954
Round: Group Stage
Game: Uruguay 7-0 Scotland
Carlos Borges was only the second South American player to score a World Cup hat-trick on European soil when he netted three for Uruguay against Scotland in 1954.
His only other goal at the tournament came as Uruguay beat England in the quarter-finals, but he was best known at club level as the scorer of the first ever goal in Copa Libertadores history.
16. Sandor Kocsis (Hungary)
World Cup: 1954
Round: Group Stage
Game: Hungary 8-3 West Germany
Having already scored a hat-trick against South Korea, Sandor Kocsis went one better against West Germany three days later and got four.
Kocsis also got goals in the quarter and semi finals to take his tally to 11, but Germany took revenge in the final as Hungary were beaten.
17. Burhan Sagrin (Turkey)
World Cup: 1954
Round: Group Stage
Game: Turkey 7-0 South Korea
Turkey enjoyed their first ever World Cup win in 1954 when they slaughtered South Korea 7-0 in Geneva.
Burhan Sagrin netted three times in that game in what was otherwise a rather short international career.
18. Max Morlock (West Germany)
World Cup: 1954
Round: Group Stage (playoff)
Game: West Germany 7-2 Turkey
Having been heavily beaten by Hungary and tied with Turkey at the end of the group stage, West Germany needed a playoff against the Turks.
Nurnberg icon Max Morlock, who later went on to score in the victorious final upset over Hungary, got a hat-trick in the 7-2 triumph.
19. Theodor Wagner (Austria)
World Cup: 1954
Round: Quarter-Finals
Game: Austria 7-5 Switzerland
Following on from teammate Erich Probst in the group stage, Theodor Wagner scored three in Austria’s 12-goal thriller against Switzerland.
Wagner got Austria’s first, third and sixth goals in the 7-5 win, which ultimately proved decisive in the record-breaking game.
20. Josef Hugi (Switzerland)
World Cup: 1954
Round: Quarter-Finals
Game: Austria 7-5 Switzerland
Barely any sooner had Theodor Wagner completed his hat-trick for Austria, Switzerland’s Josef Hugi got one of his own in the same game.
Hugi's was the eighth and final hat-trick of a goal-laden 1954 World Cup.
21. Just Fontaine (France)
World Cup: 1958
Round: Group Stage
Game: France 7-3 Paraguay
A star of Stade de Reims' golden 1950s side at club level, Just Fontaine opened his World Cup account with a hat-trick straight off the bat.
Fontaine had scored six goals by the end of the group stage alone and averaged well over a goal per game in his France career as a whole.
22. Pele (Brazil)
World Cup: 1958
Round: Semi-Finals
Game: Brazil 5-2 France
At 17 in 1958, Pele had already scored the winner in a tight quarter-final against Wales, before his semi-final hat-trick against France.
A superstar was born in that moment and he went on to get two more goals in the final as Brazil won the World Cup for the first time.
23. Just Fontaine (France)
World Cup: 1958
Round: Third Place Playoff
Game: France 6-3 West Germany
Just Fontaine scored at least once in all six games France played at the 1958 World Cup, including four against Germany to finish in third place.
Fontaine's overall tally of 13 goals at the competition is still an all-time record for a single World Cup tournament.
24. Florian Albert (Hungary)
World Cup: 1962
Round: Group Stage
Game: Hungary 6-1 Bulgaria
The only hat-trick of the 1962 World Cup in Chile was score by Hungarian forward Florian Albert, who was joint top scorer at the tournament.
Albert, a future Ballon d'Or winner in 1967, scored his hat-trick in the group stage but couldn't help Hungary get beyond the last eight.
25. Eusebio (Portugal)
World Cup: 1966
Round: Quarter-Finals
Game: Portugal 5-3 North Korea
Portugal were in danger of suffering an embarrassing fate even worse than Italy when they were 3-0 down to North Korea in the 1966 World Cup quarter-finals. Enter, Eusebio.
The Benfica superstar scored four goals without reply at Goodison Park to turn the result on its head and finished the tournament with nine in total.
26. Geoff Hurst (England)
World Cup: 1966
Round: Final
Game: England 4-2 West Germany (aet)
The first and still only hat-trick scored in a World Cup final is a record that belongs to England hero Geoff Hurst, whose iconic treble in 1966 helped the Three Lions lift the trophy.
Hurst had only been called up for the first time a few months before and wasn’t a starter until Jimmy Greaves got injured earlier in the tournament.
27. Gerd Muller (West Germany)
World Cup: 1970
Round: Group Stage
Game: West Germany 5-2 Bulgaria
Marginally too young for selection in 1966, Gerd Muller was 24 and hitting the peak of a phenomenal career by the time of the 1970 World Cup.
Der Bomber, as he was known, scored three times in a comprehensive German win over Bulgaria in only his second World Cup appearance.
28. Gerd Muller (West Germany)
World Cup: 1970
Round: Group Stage
Game: West Germany 3-1 Peru
Gerd Muller scored World Cup hat-tricks in successive games in 1970, netting a treble against Peru only four days after doing so against Bulgaria.
He went on to finish his first World Cup tournament with ten goals and got another four in 1974, holding the all-time record until 2006.
29. Dusan Bajevic (Yugoslavia)
World Cup: 1974
Round: Group Stage
Game: Yugoslavia 9-0 Zaire
Yugoslavia topped their World Cup group ahead of Brazil and Scotland in 1974 thanks to a 9-0 annihilation of Zaire, with Dusan Bajevic scoring three.
Bosnian-born Bajevic scored the first, fifth and last goal and has since gone on to have a lengthy coaching career in south east Europe.
30. Andrzej Szarmarch (Poland)
World Cup: 1974
Round: Group Stage
Game: Poland 7-0 Haiti
Andrzej Szamarch outshone Grzegorz Lato in Poland’s 7-0 group stage win over Caribbean nation Haiti in 1974, getting a hat-trick to Lato’s brace.
A strong Polish team was within one game of reaching the final and eventually finished third, with Lato the tournament’s top scorer.
31. Rob Rensenbrink (Netherlands)
World Cup: 1978
Round: Group Stage
Game: Netherlands 3-0 Iran
Rob Rensenbrink was part of the Dutch team that got to a second consecutive World Cup final in 1978, albeit without talisman Johan Cruyff.
Rensenbrink’s tournament started when he scored all three Dutch goals in a 3-0 win over Iran, converting twice from the penalty spot.
32. Teofilo Cubillas (Peru)
World Cup: 1978
Round: Group Stage
Game: Peru 4-1 Iran
Peru’s Teofilo Cubillas, whom Pele dubbed his own successor on the World Cup stage, was the second player to score a hat-trick against Iran in 1978.
Rather like the aforementioned Rob Rensenbrink, Cubillas also scored two of his three goals from 12 yards that day.
33. Laszlo Kiss (Hungary)
World Cup: 1982
Round: First Group Stage
Game: Hungary 10-1 El Salvador
A hat-trick from Laszlo Kiss in Hungary's 10-1 win over El Salvador in 1982 didn’t help the Magyars recapture the magic of nearly 30 years earlier.
It proved to be their only win of the tournament and they didn’t progress beyond the first group stage, while Kiss didn’t add to his personal goal tally.
34. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (West Germany)
World Cup: 1982
Round: Group Stage
Game: West Germany 4-1 Chile
West Germany bounced back from a shock defeat to Algeria in their 1982 opener to beat Chile 4-1, with two-time Ballon d’Or winner Karl-Heinz Rummenigge scoring three.
The subsequent German 1-0 win over Austria, contrived to send both teams through, is why final group games are now played simultaneously.
35. Zbigniew Boniek (Poland)
World Cup: 1982
Round: Second Group Stage
Game: Poland 3-0 Belgium
Poland started the 1982 second group phase in perfect fashion when Zbigniew Boniek scored all three goals in a 3-0 win over Belgium. That goal difference was later crucial for them.
Poland again finished third at the tournament, as they had done in 1974, and Boniek was transferred to Italian giants Juventus.
36. Paolo Rossi (Italy)
World Cup: 1982
Round: Second Group Stage
Game: Italy 3-2 Brazil
Paolo Rossi's hat-trick against Brazil in Italy’s final second round group game in 1982 secured that Brazilian side’s legacy as the greatest never to win the World Cup.
It was also the game that saw Rossi explode into life following what had been a slow start to the tournament off the back of a two-year ban.
37. Preben Elkjaer (Denmark)
World Cup: 1986
Round: Group Stage
Game: Demark 6-1 Uruguay
1986 was the era of ‘Danish Dynamite’ and Preben Elkjaer emerged as an enduring cult hero off the back of his goalscoring feats at that World Cup.
Elkjaer netted a hat-trick in Denmark’s second group game to go with his winner in the opener, although their journey ended in the round of 16.
38. Gary Lineker (England)
World Cup: 1986
Round: Group Stage
Game: England 3-0 Poland
England had a slow start at the 1986 World Cup and it needed the goals of Gary Lineker to drag them through the group stage, netting a hat-trick in a key win over Poland.
It was England’s first World Cup hat-trick since Geoff Hurst 20 years earlier and would be the last for another 32, while Lineker also ended up with the Golden Shoe as top scorer.
39. Igor Belanov (USSR)
World Cup: 1986
Round: Last 16
Game: USSR 3-4 Belgium (aet)
Even a hat-trick from Igor Belanov was not enough to stop the USSR crashing out to Belgium in extra-time in the first knockout round of 1986.
The Dynamo Kyiv star twice put the Soviets ahead, only for Belgium to pull away in the additional 30 minutes needed to separate the two teams.
40. Emilio Butragueno (Spain)
World Cup: 1986
Round: Last 16
Game: Spain 5-1 Denmark
So often the great underachiever until the 21st century, Spain’s first World Cup hat-trick was scored by Real Madrid legend Emilio Butragueno in 1986.
Butragueno actually scored four in a commanding 5-1 knockout win over Denmark, with Spain actually going behind in the game initially.
41. Michel (Spain)
World Cup: 1990
Round: Group Stage
Game: Spain 3-1 South Korea
Spain waited over 50 years for a first World Cup hat-trick and then two came along in relative quick succession when Michel grabbed a treble during the 1990 group stage.
La Roja qualified for the knockout stages top of their group but Michel and his teammates were soon dumped out of the competition in the last 16.
42. Tomas Skuhravy (Czechoslovakia)
World Cup: 1990
Round: Last 16
Game: Czechoslovakia 4-1 Costa Rica
Czech forward Tomas Skuhravy stayed in Italy after the 1990 World Cup to join Serie A club Genoa after his impressive displays at the tournament.
Skuhravy was the first Czech hat-trick scorer at a World Cup tournament in nearly 60 years when he got three in a 4-1 round of 16 win over Costa Rica.
43. Gabriel Batistuta (Argentina)
World Cup: 1994
Round: Group Stage
Game: Argentina 4-0 Greece
Gabriel Batistuta scored a hat-trick in Argentina’s 1994 World Cup opener against Greece, a game that is notorious for Diego Maradona’s celebration.
Maradona scored the other goal in the 4-0 win and ran over to a television camera, wide-eyed and screaming. He failed a drug test afterward and was sent home in disgrace.
44. Oleg Salenko (Russia)
World Cup: 1994
Round: Group Stage
Game: Russia 6-1 Cameroon
Russian forward Oleg Salenko scored five goals in a single World Cup match against Cameroon in 1994, which contributed to a shared Golden Shoe.
Having netted once already, Salenko’s haul of five in Russia’s final group game is a World Cup record, but he actually never scored another international goal.
45. Gabriel Batistuta (Argentina)
World Cup: 1998
Round: Group Stage
Game: Argentina 5-0 Jamaica
In 1998, Gabriel Batistuta joined an elite group of players to have scored more than one World Cup hat-trick, but he was remarkably the first to score hat-trick in multiple World Cups.
After 1994 against Greece, his second World Cup treble came against Jamaica, bizarrely exactly four years to the day on from his first.
46. Miroslav Klose (Germany)
World Cup: 2002
Round: Group Stage
Game: Germany 8-0 Saudi Arabia
Miroslav Klose scored the first three goals of a record-breaking World Cup tally in Germany’s 8-0 group stage thrashing of Saudi Arabia in 2002.
Klose was rarely as successful at club level as he was at international level and finished his Germany career in 2014 with 16 World Cup goals in total.
47. Pauleta (Portugal)
World Cup: 2002
Round: Group Stage
Game: Portugal 4-0 Poland
A hat-trick from Pauleta drove Portugal’s 4-0 win over Poland in their second group game in 2002, helping the team get over the shock of losing to the United States in game one.
But embarrassment was soon restored as a 1-0 defeat to hosts South Korea, who topped the group as a result, meant early elimination.
48. Gonzalo Higuain (Argentina)
World Cup: 2010
Round: Group Stage
Game: Argentina 4-1 South Korea
Argentina were flying under coach Diego Maradona in the early games of the 2010 World Cup, taking maximum points in the group stage.
Their biggest victory came against South Korea in game two, during which a 22-year-old Gonzalo Higuain scored a hat-trick in the 4-1 win.
49. Thomas Muller (Germany)
World Cup: 2014
Round: Group Stage
Game: Germany 4-0 Portugal
Portugal were no match for eventual champions Germany in 2014, with Thomas Muller scoring a hat-trick in a surprisingly one-sided game.
Germany were leading 3-0 at half-time, by which time Portugal were down to ten players, while Muller completed his treble in the closing stages.
50. Xherdan Shaqiri (Switzerland)
World Cup: 2014
Round: Group Stage
Game: Switzerland 3-0 Honduras
The grand honour of scoring the milestone 50th hat-trick in World Cup history went to Switzerland’s Xherdan Shaqiri in 2014 when he netted a treble against Honduras.
The goals and the 3-0 win ultimately secured Switzerland a place in the knockout stages in what threatened to be a tense and nervous affair.
51. Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)
World Cup: 2018
Round: Group Stage
Game: Portugal 3-3 Spain
With five Champions League titles and five Ballon d’Or awards by 2018, Cristiano Ronaldo was 33 when he scored his first World Cup hat-trick.
It wasn’t simply an annihilation of group stage fodder, however, as Ronaldo scored all three Portugal goals in a back and forth 3-3 draw with Spain.
52. Harry Kane (England)
World Cup: 2018
Round: Group Stage
Game: England 6-1 Panama
Harry Kane scored twice from the penalty spot against Panama on the way to becoming the first Englishman to score a World Cup hat-trick in 32 years.
Kane went on to also win the Golden Boot after finishing the competition with six goals as England placed fourth overall.
