Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has revealed that he speaks with Old Trafford legend Sir Alex Ferguson but is determined to write his own history at the club.

Ferguson retired in 2013 after winning more trophies than any other coach in the history of football, including 13 Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues.

The great Scot is immortalised in statue form outside Old Trafford, where both a stand and nearby road are also named after him, and no United boss in the nine years since has come remotely close to successfully replacing Ferguson.

The 80-year-old has remained at Old Trafford even in his retirement, hand picking his immediate successor David Moyes and continuing to sit on the football board as a director.

Ten Hag is ‘happy’ to have lines of communication with Ferguson, but also wants to do things his way.

"I speak with him, and we are happy with that, so are his advisors. We are grateful but now we have to build a new future, that is also clear,” the Dutchman told Sky Sports.

Ten Hag has started to put his own stamp on United. Lisandro Martinez and Antony have both followed him to Manchester from former club Ajax, with Tyrell Malacia also moving to England from the Eredivisie and even Christian Eriksen having former ties to Ajax.

Casemiro has also brought vast Champions League-winning experience to the squad, with United spending just over £200m in the transfer market in total.
