Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has revealed Lisandro Martinez could make his return from injury against Brentford on Saturday, while he expects Luke Shaw to play again this season.

Martinez has been out of action since sustaining ligament damage to his knee during United's clash with West Ham on February 4, avoiding an ACL injury but spending a lengthy period on the sidelines regardless. He had only returned after recovering from foot surgery a month prior and has only featured in ten games this season, having been such a vital player last season.

The 26-year-old was permitted to link up with the Argentina national team over the last couple of weeks to continue his rehabilitation and is nearing a return to action, with Ten Hag claiming he could be in the matchday squad to face Brentford this weekend.

"Yes, there is a chance [Lisandro will be in the squad]," Ten Hag said at his pre-match press conference.

"We have missed him [in] every game because he brings a composure in the team and a calmness in the team and, at the same time, a winning attitude. He can express this very clearly, he can transfer that to the team and that contributes to our levels."

Ten Hag also dismissed suggestions that Shaw will not play again this term, adding: "I expect him back, I think before the end of the season.

"That is the plan, and he is still on schedule for this. He will return into our team."

England manager Gareth Southgate put Shaw's spot at Euro 2024 in doubt this week when he claimed it was unlikely the left-back would be at the required fitness level to play a major role for the Three Lions in the tournament.

"He's going to be right on the edge of the season," Southgate said of the United defender. "We know now to play seven matches in a Euros is highly unlikely."
