Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is sweating on news about key midfielder Christian Eriksen after the Denmark international suffered an ankle injury during Saturday night’s win over Reading in the FA Cup fourth round.

Eriksen, who has formed a strong midfield partnership with Casemiro since arriving at United as a free agent in the summer, was on the receiving end of a heavy challenge from Andy Carroll early in the second half and was withdrawn not long after.

Video footage captured by fans as Eriksen was leaving Old Trafford after the game and shared on social media concerningly showed that he needed the assistance of crutches.

Ten Hag was unable to offer any firm updates after the game, only that it was an ankle injury. Given the nature of the problem, United will have to wait until at least Sunday night before being able to learn more and understanding what length of recovery is needed.

“It’s always difficult to say in this moment so short after the game has finished," Ten Hag began. “But it’s an ankle [problem]. We have to see what is the diagnosis, so it costs us a minimum of 24 hours before we know that and then I can say more.”

Eriksen, often a target for United throughout his career, has brought balance to the team as a deep-play-maker. The 30-year-old has managed seven assists in 19 Premier League games so far.

With back-to-back games against both Leeds and Barcelona coming up in the next few weeks, as well as a trip to Anfield on 5 Match, United staff and fans will be praying it will be a short absence.
