Erik ten Hag has insisted that Manchester United need to invest in the summer in order to compete for trophies next season.

The Red Devils enjoyed a much, much improved 2022/23 campaign under new manager Ten Hag, accumulating 17 more points than the 2021/22 Premier League season as well as winning the Carabao Cup and reaching the FA Cup final, in which they'll face inner-city rivals Manchester City.

Speaking to the press following his side's season-ending 2-1 win over Fulham at Old Trafford, the Man Utd manager said that, while the club were going in the right direction, signings were needed to take them to the next level.

"We are in the right direction, but we are not there where we have to be, there's still a long way to go, there's potential in this team and individual players," he explained.

"We showed during the season we made progress, that's a compliment to the players and the coaches, we worked really hard, but we have to make an investment.

"The club knows if you want to play top four, compete for trophies in this tough league then you have to invest otherwise you don't have a chance because other clubs will do."

Central to Man Utd's summer transfer plans is their pursuit of a new number nine. 90min recently reported that the club are considering signing two strikers, with one of Harry Kane, Victor Osmihen, Dusan Vlahovic and Lautaro Martinez cited as the potential marquee signing, and Rasmus Hojlund, Santiago Gimenez, Benjamin Sesko and Mohammed Kudus linked as a younger squad addition.

Elsewhere, Kim Min-jae, Declan Rice and Joshua Kimmich have all also been recently linked with a move to Old Trafford.
