Football's oldest rivalry resumes on Friday as England face Scotland on matchday two of Group D in Euro 2020.

Gareth Southgate's men got off to a steady start in their opening fixture, with Raheem Sterling getting the decisive goal in a 1-0 win over 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia. And, despite currently not holding pole position, that victory sets them up nicely to secure top spot in the group.

Scotland, on the other hand, have begun in not so solid fashion. Steve Clarke's side were beaten 2-0 by Czech Republic as Patrik Schick bagged a brace - the second of his goals being an outrageous 50-yard lob.

It leaves them bottom of Group D and in desperate need of a result at Wembley. Here's 90min's preview of the game.

England team news

There is a new face in the England camp after goalkeeper Dean Henderson was forced to withdraw from the squad because of a hip injury. That resulted in a call-up for Aaron Ramsdale, although the Sheffield United shot stopper is not likely to feature for the Three Lions.

It remains to be seen whether Harry Maguire will be deemed fit enough to feature by Friday, but Southgate will likely give the Manchester United captain more time to recover and instead stick with John Stones and Tyrone Mings - who impressed while keeping a clean sheet against Croatia.

There could be a change at full-back, however. Kyle Walker wasn't at his best in the first game, and that could allow Kieran Trippier to revert to his favoured opposition, while bringing Luke Shaw into the fold.

Scotland team news

Kieran Tierney joined his team mates in training following Scotland's 2-0 loss on matchday one, and Clarke believes the defender has a chance of playing against England on Friday - if he can, he will.

There could be a reshuffling of the pack higher up the field, too. The introductions of Billy Gilmour and Che Adams to the starting XI have been widely called for in order to give the Scots the dynamism and edge they will need to overcome Southgate's side.

England vs Scotland head to head record

Unsurprisingly, there have been many battles between these two nations - who featured in the first ever international match. Football's oldest rivalry has been played out 114 times, with England winning 48, Scotland winning 41 and 25 games finishing all-square.

Scotland actually dominated their neighbours for a while after the first meeting had taken place. During the 1870s and 1880s, Scotland won 11 of the first 17 matches, while England came out on top just twice.

But, football has changed since then. England are now the dominant force between the two, have won eight of their last 11 meetings, and are unbeaten this century.

England vs Scotland score prediction

What an occasion.

It's been 25 years since that Paul Gascoigne goal and, while we may not see something quite that magical on Friday, Southgate has some true wizards at his disposal. A front four of Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling, Mason Mount and Phil Foden (Gazza reincarnated) - with the likes of Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford also available - should be simply too much for the Scotland back line to handle.

But the form guide usually goes out the window when these two teams meet. Pride, passion and an insatiable desire to win takes over, which will be fuelled from Scotland's side by the necessity of picking up three points.

Though they are typically hard to break down playing three central defenders, their will be a time that Scotland need to go after the game - and that could allow England's creative players to utilise the space and end their Euro 2020 hopes.

Prediction: England 2-0 Scotland
