England kicked off their European Under-21 Championship finals campaign with a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Switzerland at the Bonifika Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

The Young Lions were perhaps fortunate to head into half-time with the scores at 0-0, with a combination of wayward Swiss finishing and solid goalkeeping from Aaron Ramsdale ensuring Aidy Boothroyd's side maintained parity.

Ramsdale was again called into action on a number of occasions as England struggled to offer anything going forward in the second half, and eventually the Sheffield United man's resistance was broken as Dan Ndoye's long-range effort looped up over him and into the back of the net.

England pushed for an equaliser but their efforts proved to be unsuccessful as Boothroyd's side suffered defeat in their opening game of the competition.

That's the match highlights out of the way, now to those all important England Under-21 player ratings...

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Aaron Ramsdale (GK) - 7/10 - The Sheffield United man made a couple of smart saves early on to prevent his side falling behind. Produced another great save in the second half and, despite some poor distribution, his performance was solid.

Max Aarons (RB) - 5/10 - Really didn't offer the sort of attacking outlet we've become used to seeing at Norwich. Defended well but needs to do much more in the opposition's half.

Ben Godfrey (CB) - 7/10 - Looked a threat from set pieces as he regularly towered above his marker. Used his pace well to prevent a couple of dangerous situations arising and can be pleased with his display.

Marc Guehi (CB) - 6/10 - Refused to be bullied by a physical Swiss frontline and seemed to enjoy the battle.

Lloyd Kelly (LB) - 5/10 - Only really looked to offer any sort of attacking outlet once England had gone behind. Neat and tidy in possession but very little more to say.

2. Midfielders

Tom Davies (CM) - 4/10 - Did plenty of running and was combative throughout, but a very underwhelming display from a Premier League regular.

Oliver Skipp (CM) - 7/10 -
Rewarded with a place in the starting XI after a stellar campaign with Norwich. Showed some lovely touches in the midfield and was always willing to take possession from the defence.

Emile Smith Rowe (AM) - 5/10 -
Produced a couple of surging runs to get his team up the field, but the quality in the final third just wasn't there.

3. Forwards

Callum Hudson-Odoi (RW) - 7/10 - Looked a threat skipping in from the right-hand side. Couldn't produce that key moment of quality but he looked lively throughout.

Eddie Nketiah (ST) - 4/10 - Captained the side despite a tough season domestically with Arsenal. Played slightly off the frontline in a bid to linkup play but it really didn't work.

Dwight McNeil (LW) - 4/10 - Struggled to impact the game as much as
Callum Hudson-Odoi on the opposite flank and his delivery was poor whenever he did beat his man.

4. Substitutes

Curtis Jones (CM) - 6/10
