England 2-1 Poland: Player ratings as late Harry Maguire strike hands Three Lions win

England maintained their 100% record in 2022 World Cup qualifying after a 2-1 win over Poland at Wembley on Wednesday night.

The Three Lions hit the front early on as Raheem Sterling earned his side a penalty following rash challenge from Michal Helik. Harry Kane stepped up to take the spot kick and he made no mistake in firing the ball beyond Wojciech Szczęsny.

England looked to be cruising towards a routine win, but John Stones' loss in concentration saw him needlessly concede possession on the edge of his own box, allowing Jakub Moder the chance to restore parity for the visitors - a chance he didn't miss.

Stones had a huge hand in England's second of the night with just five minutes remaining, as he headed the ball back into the danger area before Harry Maguire unleashed an unstoppable effort which proved too hot for Szczęsny.

1. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Nick Pope (GK) - 6/10 - Must have made about three saves throughout the March internationals, and in fairness there wasn't much he could do about Poland's equaliser. Probably would have liked the chance to prove himself a little more in Jordan Pickford's absence.

Kyle Walker (RB) - 6/10 - Looked steady when completing his defensive duties and tried to surge forward whenever he had the chance.

John Stones (CB) - 4/10 - Looked to be continuing to feel his way back into the side with another solid performance - and then it happened. The old John Stones returned with a terrible error which cost his side the lead on the night.

Harry Maguire (CB) - 7/10 - Won every aerial duel he was involved in and was comfortable in possession. Possibly lucky to survive a handball shout in the second half but it would have been harsh. Superb strike to hand his side the win.

Ben Chilwell (LB) - 7/10 - A constant outlet down the England left and showed he had the quality to produce the goods in the final third. Could have had a couple of assists to his name on another night as he gave Southgate a lot to think about with Luke Shaw also in contention to be England's first-choice left-back.

2. Midfielders

Declan Rice (CM) - 7/10 - Always looking to take the ball from the defence and offered a drive to try and drag his side up the field. Recovered possession well on a couple of occasions.

Kalvin Phillips (CM) - 5/10 - Just kept it simple. There really isn't much more to say about a player given very little defensive work to do and who rarely threatened to pass the ball forward.

Mason Mount (CM) - 7/10 - Played with the vigour of a man who'd been told it was his last ever game of football. Didn't stop running and continued to hassle the Poland backline.

3. Forwards

Phil Foden (RW) - 5/10 - Not the kind of performance we've come to expect from the Manchester City starlet. Struggled to get into the game and began demanding to take set pieces in a bid to influence proceedings, but it wasn't to be his night.

Harry Kane (ST) - 7/10 - There aren't many players in the world you'd rather have standing over a spot kick to hand your side the lead. The Tottenham man led the line well and linked up play with the midfield brilliantly.

Raheem Sterling (LW) - 7/10 - Lovely wing play to open up the Poland backline and win the early penalty. Looked a threat whenever he had the ball at his feet.
