England 2-0 Germany: Player ratings as Three Lions knock Die Mannschaft out of Euro 2020

Goals from Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane gave England a 2-0 win over Germany on Tuesday evening, as the Three Lions booked their place in Euro 2020's last eight.

Both sides missed opportunities to break the deadlock in the first period, with Timo Werner and Raheem Sterling forcing good saves, while Harry Kane had the ball nicked off his toes by Mats Hummels in front of an empty net before the break.

Die Mannschaft seemed the more likely to find the net after the interval, with Kai Havertz bringing a superb stop out of Jordan Pickford, but it was Gareth Southgate's men who bagged the opener. Kane and Jack Grealsih were involved in a sweeping team move before Sterling (who else?) finished off Luke Shaw's low cross to put the Three Lions ahead on 75 minutes.

After Thomas Muller passed up a one on one opportunity to level the scores, Kane was on hand to end his wait for a goal and double England's lead with five minutes to go. Grealish found himself on the ball in the area, before squaring for the captain to nod into the net.

Southgate's men held off the German pressure late on and saw out an historic 2-0 win against Die Mannschaft to secure a place in the quarter final of Euro 2020.

ENGLAND PLAYER RATINGS

1. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Jordan Pickford (GK) - 8/10 - Looks so assured between the sticks in an England shirt. Made a great save to deny Werner in the first half and a sensational one to deny Havertz early in the second.

Kyle Walker (CB) - 8/10 - Brilliantly alert to runners in behind and any danger that came into the box. Took up positions in the centre of the field to offer options to team mates and recycled possession really well in doing so, helping to start attacks and find good threaded passes.

John Stones (CB) - 7/10 - Composed and comfortable when faced with his opposition as well as stepping forward to nick possession, making three tackles.

Harry Maguire (CB) - 7/10 - Had a few marauding runs forward to drive his side upfield and was typically stoic defensively. Bloody frightening to attackers and dominated in the air.

2. Wing-backs & Midfielders

Kieran Trippier (RWB) - 7/10 - Had a few bright moments, looking to get in behind and delivered some quality from the wing with two key passes. Also undertook his defensive duties well, stifling Robin Gosens' effect. Worryingly brought off with injury.

Declan Rice (CM) - 6/10 - Solid enough but didn't really commit to pressing or sitting deep enough, therefore being caught out of position a few times. Also fairly tentative and dull on the front foot.

Kalvin Phillips (CM) - 7/10 - Put in several tasty challenges and pressed with great energy. Was good to see him really aim to make an attacking impact as well, making searching passes in behind and surging forward to latch onto balls.

Luke Shaw (LWB) - 7/10 - Decent defensive shift, mostly keeping tight to Joshua Kimmich and eventually provided the attacking output he needed to - assisting Sterling for the opening goal and was involved in the second.

3. Forwards

Bukayo Saka (RW) - 7/10 - Was allowed to drift around and did so to good effect. Bright every time he picked up the ball, spinning away from defenders effortlessly to break the lines.

Harry Kane (ST) - 7/10 - Showed glimpses of why he topped the goal-scoring and assist charts last season and finally got his goal, heading home from close range.

Raheem Sterling (LW) - 8/10 - When he drove forward and switched up the tempo he really had the Germans worried, and made it count by starting and finishing a lovely move to notch the opener.

4. Substitutes

Jack Grealish (LW) - 8/10 - Came on and was instantly involved in the opening goal, laying it off for Shaw to cross, before assisting the second.

GERMANY PLAYER RATINGS

5. Goalkeeper & Defenders

Manuel Neuer (GK) - 5/10 - Forced into a decent stop early on but couldn't do anything about either goal.

Matthias Ginter (CB) - 5/10 - Pulled out of position on numerous occasions due to England's fluidity, and was spun far too easily once or twice.

Mats Hummels (CB) - 7/10 - Mostly alive to the danger, remaining strong and solid throughout to make nine interventions - notably denying Kane a certain goal in first-half stoppage time.

Antonio Rudiger (CB) - 5/10 - Struggled to contain Saka and Trippier on England's right and allowed them too much joy.

6. Wing-backs & Midfielders

Joshua Kimmich (RWB) - 6/10 - Couldn't really show his creative quality against England's energetic press, although did worry the back line once or twice. Wasn't too comfortable trying to contain the threat of England's left - from which both goals came.

Leon Goretzka (CM) - 6/10 - Made some excellent surges forward and really troubled his opposition when turning and driving towards goal, but faded as time passed.

Toni Kroos (CM) - 6/10 - Was marshalled fairly well and rarely found the time to pick a pass and really influence proceedings. Broke up play brilliantly, however, making five ball recoveries.

Robin Gosens (LWB) - 5/10 - Another fairly quiet showing. Worried England when he got into the box but didn't do it enough and often allowed too much space in behind for Trippier to wander into.

7. Forwards

Thomas Muller (RW) - 4/10 - Physically dominated by his opposite numbers and couldn't really make that much of an impact. Occasionally found space and delivered some good through balls to his colleagues. Was clean through late on and astonishingly put it wide - criminal.

Timo Werner (ST) - 6/10 - Was always on the shoulder of the last man and made some good runs in behind. Was put through on the half hour mark and really should've beaten Pickford.

Kai Havertz (LW) - 7/10 - Found some really promising pockets of space in and around the box when Germany managed to mount attacks, and seemed the most likely to make something happen for Germany. Nearly found one of the goals of the tournament with a volley but was denied brilliantly by Pickford.
