England secured an unconvincing 1-0 win over Austria at the Riverside Stadium on Wednesday night in the first of their Euro 2020 warm-up games.

The Three Lions started brightly though they were unable to carve out any real clear-cut chances, and by the time referee Lawrence Visser signalled for half-time Gareth Southgate's men had very little to show for their efforts other than a timid Harry Kane effort that would have been ruled out for offside.

The second-half looked much more promising for the home side and they took the lead just before the hour mark. Jesse Lingard did well to thread the ball through to Jack Grealish and despite the Aston Villa man being denied by a last-ditch challenge the ball fell to Bukayo Saka who slotted home.

The goal seemed to spark Austria into life and just minutes later they came within the width of the crossbar of equalising as Marcel Sabitzer's brilliant strike cannoned off the frame of the goal after Jordan Pickford got a slight touch on the ball.

Austria continued to push forward and England were lucky to escape with the win after Ben White produced a goal line clearance late on to preserve their 1-0 win.

That's the match highlights out of the way, now to those all important England player ratings...

ENGLAND PLAYER RATINGS

1. Goalkeeper & defenders

Jordan Pickford (GK) - 7/10 - Given next to nothing to do in the first 45 but did showcase his decent footballing ability with a couple of fizzed passes out to Jack Grealish. Given much more to do in the second half and looked very impressive.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (RB) - 6/10 -
Got himself into some threatening positions early on but was let down by his loose first touch. Looked steady but then picked up a late innocuous injury which looks like it may impact his Euro 2020 chances.

Conor Coady (CB) - 5/10 -
Some nice distribution into midfield to help open up the game. Caused a few problems by Sabitzer and will be glad to see the back of the RB Leipzig man.

Tyrone Mings (CB) - 6/10 -
Asked to step into the channels on a couple of occasions and did well when isolated against the Austrian forwards. Didn't do a lot wrong before being withdrawn in the second half.

Kieran Trippier LB) - 6/10 -
Helped offer an outlet on the England left as Bukayo Saka drifted infield. A little less effective in the second half, but a decent performance on the whole.

2. Midfielders

Declan Rice (CM) - 6/10 - Played slightly further forward than Bellingham and helped to add legs to the midfield. Withdrawn in the second half as Gareth Southgate looked to offer some of those not involved in the final Euro 2020 squad a bit of game time.

Jude Bellingham (CM) - 8/10 -
Imperious display in the midfield, helping to mop up any loose balls and disrupting the opposition's attempts to string a few passes together. If he wasn't in Southgate's starting XI plans before this match, then he definitely should be now.

Jack Grealish (AM) - 7/10 -
Lovely slide rule ball to play Kane through on goal in the first half. Spent the majority of the game on the floor having been hacked down by the Austria midfield but was busy and threatening all game.

3. Forwards

Jesse Lingard (RW) - 6/10 - Did very well in the build-up to the England goal as he threaded it through to Grealish. Not his best performance this season but a thoroughly professional one given the circumstances.

Harry Kane (ST) - 6/10 - Missed a great opportunity with half an hour gone as he fired straight at Austria's debutant goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann when through on goal. Crucial to England's opener but was guilty of maybe dropping a little too deep at times.

Bukayo Saka (LW) - 7/10 - Keen to move infield and caused the Austria backline all sorts of problems cutting inside. Made a potentially tricky finish from a tight angle look comfortable as he handed England the lead.

4. Substitutes

Ollie Watkins (ST) - 6/10

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (ST) - 6/10

Ben Godfrey (CB) - 5/10

James Ward-Prowse (CM) - 6/10

Ben White (CB) - 6/10
