Dzsenifer Marozsan announces retirement from international football

Dzsenifer Marozsan has announced her decision to retire from international football next month, ruling the Lyon star out of going to the 2023 World Cup with Germany.

Still only 30, Marozsan is one of the finest and most decorated players of her generation. But the ACL injury from which she returned to action in November and had forced her to miss Euro 2022 last summer is a motivating factor in walking away from international duty.

Germany’s planned friendly against Brazil on 11 April will now serve as a farewell game for the six-time Champions League winner as her 112th and final international appearance.

“Because of my serious knee injury in spring 2022, I realised that it felt right to retire from the national team,” she explained in a statement published by the DFB.

“Missing the European Championship in England was one of many signs.

“I'm doing well again [with Lyon], but my knee isn't the same anymore - I have to work a lot to be able to do all the training sessions and games. I think it would just be too much to do internationals, preparation and the [World Cup] tournament.”

Germany coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg said, “I have the greatest respect for Dzsenifer Marozsan's decision. She is a great personality and an outstanding footballer who has done an incredible amount for German football.

“We all appreciate her very much in the national team and can only thank her for everything. She should be given a dignified, best possible farewell. We will invite her again in April and give her one last game against Brazil.”

Marozsan made her senior Germany debut aged 18 in 2010 and helped her country win Euro 2013 and the 2016 Olympics. She went to five major tournaments in total, including World Cups in 2015 and 2019, as well as captaining the side at Euro 2017.
